Encyclopedia article about Ivan Allen Jr. who served as mayor of Atlanta from 1962 to 1970 and is credited with leading the city through an era of significant physical and economic growth and with maintaining calm during the civil rights movement. He graduated from Boys High School in Atlanta and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps during World War II. Allen headed Atlanta's Community Chest drive and served as president of the chamber of commerce. The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
