Description

Interview with Ivan Allen, conducted during the writing of Georgia Tech History, Technology, and Society Professor Ronald H. Bayor's 1996 book Race and the Shaping of Twentieth-Century Atlanta. In this interview, Allen addresses racial issues that he experienced during his terms as Mayor of Atlanta. A Georgia Tech alum, Allen led Atlanta through the civil rights movement and racial integration efforts. Before becoming mayor, Allen directed Atlanta's Community Chest. As mayor from 1962-1970, he integrated schools, city labor, and businesses. Allen was the only Caucasian politician from the South to testify before Congress in favor of the Civil Rights Act. His work promoted great economic development in Atlanta, earning the city an identity of cultural and racial tolerance.
