Bayor's 1996 book Race and the Shaping of Twentieth-Century Atlanta. In this interview, Allen addresses racial issues that he experienced during his terms as Mayor of Atlanta. A Georgia Tech alum, Allen led Atlanta through the civil rights movement and racial integration efforts. Before becoming mayor, Allen directed Atlanta's Community Chest. As mayor from 1962-1970, he integrated schools, city labor, and businesses. Allen was the only Caucasian politician from the South to testify before Congress in favor of the Civil Rights Act. Bond was an activist and leader during the civil rights movement. He helped to establish the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Having served as the first president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Bond served four terms in the Georgia House of Representative and six terms in the Georgia Senate. From 1998-2010, he served as chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Notably, Bond narrated the Eyes on the Prize PBS video series.
