Description
An account of the resource
Interview with Herbert Jenkins, conducted during the writing of Georgia Tech History, Technology, and Society Professor Ronald H. Bayor's 1996 book Race and the Shaping of Twentieth-Century Atlanta. In this interview, Jenkins focuses on changes that were occurring in Atlanta and the Atlanta Police Department, such as the hiring of African Americans and the reactions of African Americans and Caucasians to integration in Atlanta. Jenkins was the Police Chief during the civil rights demonstrations in Atlanta during the 1960s. He maintained order during sit-ins and protected the freedom riders who rode through Atlanta. Also, Jenkins orchestrated the hiring of Atlanta's first eight African American police officers. He was the longest-serving police chief, in office from 1947-1972. Jenkins helped Atlanta through the integration of parks, public schools, and public transportation.
