In this interview, Young addresses the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, African American churches, and working with Martin Luther King, Jr. He also discusses his election and the evolution of the power structure of businesses with the Action Four Plan. Young was a U.S. Congressman from the 5th district from 1973-1977. He was the first African American from Georgia to be elected to Congress since Reconstruction. In this interview, McKinney discusses the racial discrimination that he experienced while working for the Atlanta Police Department. McKinney integrated the Atlanta Police Department by becoming Atlanta's earliest African American police officer. McKinney spearheaded the efforts of the Afro-American Police League by demanding the hiring of more African Americans and better treatment for African American civilians. He also served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1983 to 2002. Scott, conducted during the writing of Georgia Tech History, Technology, and Society Professor Ronald H. Bayor's 1996 book Race and the Shaping of Twentieth-Century Atlanta. In this interview, Scott speaks about Maynard Jackson, housing issues for African Americans, and overall racial tensions in Atlanta. From 1934-1997, Scott was the editor and publisher of The Atlanta Daily World, the oldest African American newspaper in Atlanta. He argued for voting rights and education access for African Americans, and urged the public to support African American-owned businesses. Also, he was criticized for not supporting sit-ins and gradually adopting a conservative political view. Bayor's 1996 book Race and the Shaping of Twentieth-Century Atlanta. This interview focuses on Alexander's role in urban development and civil rights issues. Alexander was a Caucasian architect who shaped the skyline of Atlanta. He spent a year at Georgia Tech in 1936, before transferring to Yale. He helped to design buildings, such as Rich's Store for Homes, AT&T Midtown Center, Coca-Cola headquarters, and the State of Georgia building. Alexander was also a civic and political activist. He chaired the Citizens Advisory Committee for Urban Renewal, which strived to replace slum housing with low-income housing. Not only was he a figure in the campaign against segregation, Alexander worked alongside John Lewis and was an organizer for a dinner to honor Dr. Martin Luther King's Nobel Peace Prize. This interview mainly addresses the reactions of the Caucasian business and political communities to the election of Maynard Jackson as Atlanta's first African American mayor. A Waycross, GA native, Sweat was the Chief Administrative Officer for former Mayors Ivan Allen Jr. and Sam Massell. He had experience in journalism and graduated with a degree in public administration from Georgia State University. Sweat is known for conserving the Chattahoochee River and preserving Atlanta's water supply. He also improved Downtown Atlanta from being an area of abandonment to a community of mixed-income residences. Sweat is also celebrated for organizing programs to gather Caucasian and African American leaders in unity. Bayor's 1996 book Race and the Shaping of Twentieth-Century Atlanta. This interview is about Hollowell's experience in fighting discriminating throughout Georgia. An African American civil rights attorney, Hollowell is known for suing the University of Georgia for racist admission policies. Winning his suit, Hollowell made it possible for Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton E. Holmes to enter UGA as the institution's first African American students.
