  • Text: HAL L. SMITH ATLANTA, GEORGIA September 9, 1966 Mayor Tvan Allen, Jr, City of Atlanta Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Dear Ivan: As a friend and as a citizen, I want to tell you how proud I am of you and the manner in which you handled the recent disturbance on Capitol Avenue. Your courage, good judgement and patience demonstrated again the splendid leader- ship you are furnishing our community. I was pleased that the radio and press gave you strong support and thet you had recognition nationally from Vice President Humphries and the President of the United States. It was also gratfying to note the support you received from all segments of our population. Your stand for law and order, and yet recognizing the legitimate needs of some of our less fortunate citizens, is certainly commendable, You and all those associated with you in the handling of the incident are certainly due the heartfelt thanks of the citizens of our community. Please do not feel that this letter requires a reply. I just wanted to express my respect and admiration for you in the job you are doing as the Mayor of our City. With warmest regards, Sincerely, A

Your courage and your decisiveness epitomize the best qualities we seek in civic leadership. Typical of your entire public career is the manner in which you faced our problems head-on this week. I recall your similar quick action when our community witnessed a tragic accident in Paris. You have a remarkable talent for moving into the center of problems rather than waiting for them to go away. I like this quality in you. Our town is fortunate to have you as its spokesman and leader. You deserve the fullest backing possible and the gratitude of every good citizen of our community. You have both my thanks and my support. It's a personal comfort to know you're "'in charge. Ivan Allen, Jr. Mayor, City of Atlanta City Hall Atlanta, Geargia Dear Mr. Allen: Out-of-town visitors havecoften asked me why Atlantan's have such fierce civie pride - sometimes this is hard to explain - we have it - we don't know exactly why - it's like trying to explain why you like a great symphony or the feeling you get from looking at a great painting and somehow knowing all is well. On Tuesday of this week you’put this pride in sharp focus. It was a rare display of courage and a sincere attempt to be "where the action was" in order to do the most good for all. I was fearful on several occasions as I saw you on the T-V and am grateful that you suffered no physical effects --the mental pictures will not soon fade because I as well as most Atlanta citizens know how deeply you care about Atlanta and the good of ALL its people.
