  • Text: = + parents cee _ > Millions of lost souls will stand in the judg- ment day before the Great White Throne and, hearing their condemnation, will hyster- ically scream, “I accuse my parents.” There are thousands of parents who have given their children everything but God. They have provided them with nourishing food, warm clothing and liberal educations . . . but no Saviour. They have showered them with gifts and protected them from harm ... but have not provided a family altar. - They have read to them Dick Tracy and Superman, but not the Bible. They have tak- en them to the movies, but not to Sunday school. They have cursed before their chil- dren, but never prayed. Thus thousands of children have lived to curse their parents for bringing them into the world and raising them without Christ. One of America’s great moral problems today is juvenile delinquency. The majority of criminal offenses are being committed by teen-agers. They have no reverence for God and thus no respect for authority. Public I accuse my schools have instilled their anti-Bible philo- sophy of “behaviorism” in their heads and they are expressing themselves to the utter consternation of educators, statesmen, clergy- men and police. Juvenile delinquency is but the out-growth of adult delinquency. The son will be no better than his father, the daughter no better than her mother. A God-less, Bible-less, drunken father will produce an equally worthless son. A smoking, beer-drinking, gadabout mother will produce a loose-living and pleasure-loving daughter. God Almighty will hold you parents ac- countable for sending your children to hell. Judge Healy of the Juvenile Court of Detroit, addressing a Young People’s Rally on July 7, 1945, said, “Eighty percent of the young- sters arraigned in my court came from homes in which there has been no religious train- ing.” Bible-less homes produce potential criminals. The breakdown of morals among our youth is the direct result of throwing the Bible out of the homes, schools, and churches of America. Boys and girls who are already reaping the disastrous results of their sinful orgies, are already crying, “I accuse my parents; they never told me about God, Christ, the Bible, sin or sex.” To be responsible for the demoralization of a youngster is a crime of colossal propor- tions. If your child goes to hell, it will be, to a great extent, your fault. If you are on your way to the lake of fire, your child is following in your footsteps. Friend, you can lead your children to heaven or to hell. The sole solution is for you to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour. “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (I Timothy 1:15). Believe God’s Word and receive His Son now—and you will be saved. Then you must begin living for your Lord in your home by immediately establishing a time each day when you gather your family together for prayer and the reading of the Bible. Then, by God’s help, endeavor to lead your children to the Saviour, who in turn will keep them from the pollutions of this world. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). —Davw D. • Text: PEOPLE’S FORUM All Letters Must Be Signed. Names Withheld on Request. A FEW WORDS ON WELTNER To the Editor of The Herald: This Weltner boy, a Repre- sentative in the House of Rep- resentatives from the 3rd Dis- trict of Georgia, and nominee of the Democratic primary to succeed himself, has announced that he will not serve further as the Representative from the 3rd District of Georgia. This action of Weltner’s is indeed a step in the right di- Tection. It would be ‘just fine if every office holder in the United States who holds to the philosophy such as Weltner’s would follow suit. It is quite easy to understand the reason back of Weltner’s ac- tion. I refer to the true reason; not the reason he made public. Had he seen fit to adhere to the truth, he would have said that he is taking this action be- cause he has been a miserable failure; that he is seeing, day by day, a disintegration of all that he has worked so hard for. Weltner forfeited the respect and confidence of all white peo- ple and a majority of Negro people in the section of the country he calls home, because of his activity in favor of Civil Rights legislation. Now he finds himself a man without a country; a man without a friend. Quite naturally this state of affairs has caused him to become despondent, which he now evidences by his action in refusing to try to go on as Representative from the 3rd District of Georgia. I believe that the reason Weltner gives for his action is the flimsiest I ever heard, and it has no semblance of truth in it. He says that he has to take this action because of the loyalty oath which the Demo- crats require every candidate to take, and which Weltner took. Weltner seems to want people to think that by the action which he is taking, he is no longer bound by the oath he took. He swore that he would Support every nominee of the Democratie party, and he af- fixed his signature thereto, Any subsequent action by him can- not in any way affect an oath which he had previously taken. If Weltner is looking for a job, I suggest that he apply at a broadeasting company for a job as news commentator. They might appreciate his talents there. PAUL R. COURSON Albany, Ga.

  • Text: ATLANTA, Ga. (AP)—Lester G. Maddox, a segregationist running a shoestring campaign, has captured the Democratic nomination for governor—upset- ting a moderate candidate and Georgia's middleroad racial course. Maddox, a furniture merchant who quit the cafeteria business rather than be forced to serve Negroes, decisively defeated |Ellis G, Arnall, a former gov- ‘enor, in yesterday’s primary runoff. Arnall had led a. six- man race two weeks ago. “God and the people are my campaign managers,” exulted Maddox, 50, after pulling off the upset without big-money back- ers or the support of highrank- ing politicians. reported the vote ‘count stood at: Maddox 419,557, Arnall 356,078, Not a Racial Campaign A fiery opponent of the federal government, President Johnson, liberalism, socialism and com- munism, Maddox says he shares the racial views of Alabama’s Gov. George C. Wallace. But }Maddox said very little about \racial issues in his campaign. Arnall, 59, who scored a major upset two decades ago to win the governorship over the popular Eugene Talmadge, had charged in the runoff t that Mad- dox was radical and an ex- tremist, a man whose symbols were ax handles and pistols. Segregationist Tops Arnall In Georgia Democrat Runoff A Look at the Lester Maddox Politi- cal Method. Page A-12 Maddox, in resisting integra- tion in 1964 and 1965, once waved a pistol to chase Negroes from his place and provided ax handles for white patrons. When ordered by a court to serve Negroes, Maddox quit the cafeteria business. Arnall met Maddox to concede personally. Some followers of Arnall said Republicans voted for Maddox as the easier oppo- nent for their nominee in No- vember. Taking on Maddox in the first Georgia two-party contest for governor since Reconstruction will be Rep. Howard H. (Bo) Callaway, the state’s lone Re- publican congressman. He is a conservative ex-Democrat who helped carry the state for Barry Goldwater in 1964. The voting patterns were jumbled strangely—adding at least some weight to the view that Republicans voted for Maddox. In the Goldwater strongholds of Macon, Augusta and Columbus, Arnall managed bare majorities after leading the field two weeks ago in those same cities. In the lieutenant governor’s race, the voters nominated moderate George T. Smith, speaker of the Georgia House, over conservative Peter Zack Geer, the incumebnt. Geer told newsmen last night: “I want to tell you one more time—I’m still the lieutenant governor of the white folks, ’m glad Lester Maddox beat Ellis Arnall.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who lives in Atlanta, said the voting “revealed that Georgia is desperately competing with Mississippi for the bottom.” “T must confess that Mr. Maddox’s victory causes me to be ashamed to be a Georgian. This pretends that the days ahead in race relations will be confusingly dreary and the nights will be darker than a thousand midnights.”’ Maddox takes charge of the almost completely disorganized Democratic party which under Gov. Carl E. Sanders has steered a moderate course, Maddox will control the state delegation to the Democratic National Convention in 1968 and serve as titular party chief, even i he loses to Callaway on Nov. racial | Wallace is expected to run for president on a third-party ticket in “68. Other Results In other contests yesterday, Rep. G. Elliott Hagan won re- nomination to Congress from Georgia’s 1st District, beating See MADDOX, Page A-6
