Mayor of Atlanta, Gerogia
My Dear Mayor:
I saw you and your city on the news cast last
night, during and after the riot. I was very much impressed
with you and I was deeply moved by your reflections as you
strolled amid the ruins left by the riot.
You showed great understanding of the problems
that face your city. At the same time your courage and determination must be a great source of comfort to the people of
Atlanta.
I salute you as a great leader and offer my
deepest sympathy to you and all of the good people of Atlanta.
I trust that your courage and wisdom might
serve as an inspiration to the leaders of other American
cities.
Yours respectfully_,

Dear Ivan:

My wife died almost two years ago, and I
have recently married a charming lady, who has a beautiful
home here and we are living most hapoily.

This does not by any means indicate I have
lost interest in my home city, as I have the morning
paper mailed to me and read it as closely as I always
have.

I was shocked at the distressing incident you
have recently undergone with an element of Negroes, and
no one doubts it was from outside interference. You will
recall that some years ago I commended you heartily for
your position before a Committee in Washington when
many others disagreed.

Enclosed are editorials from both Miami papers
commending you and the city of Atlanta and I have heard
favorable comment here on your appearance before a
Committee on city needs.

Be assured of my best wishes!

Mayor Ivan Allen Ire
Mayor of Atlanta
Atlanta, Georgia

Dear Mayor Allen:

It is regretable that a handful of ultra-
radicals are trying to tarnish the good in-
age of Atlanta. As a Westerner who visited
your city a few years ago, when conditions
were not as favorable as they are today, I
said then end I say now; Every Negro should
visit Atlante and see the fine colleges,
homes with swimming po@ls and know some of
the outstanding leaders in the Negro com-
munity. :

When I think of Atlanta, I think of my Fra-
ternity Brothers, Drs. Ben Mays, Rufus Cle-
ments, Albert Manley, Brazil, McClinton and
his fine hospital, Jesse Blayton and his
radio station, the late Judge Waldon, the
Standerd Life Insurance Company, and many
many other fine American Institutions.

atlanta is truly the Athens of the South
with its meny colleges. Morehouse hes
turned out more college presidents, pro-
fessors and successful business man than
any of our other colleges.

I believe the true image of Atlanta could
be created if your very liberal Atlanta
Constitution would be made public by

the contributions of the educated people
who live there, rather than by some
agitator, pictured on the front page of
our Denver Post with his eyes bulging

as it was necessary for the officer to
subdue him before arrest.
