Honorable Ivan Allen, Mayor
City of Atlanta
City Hall
Atlanta, Georgia
Dear Mayor Allen:
On behalf of the officers and directors of the Atlanta Real Estate Board,
I am wr iting to express the appreciation of the Board for your forthright
actions during the recent rioting in our City. We wish to join with many
others in pledging our support to you in your continuing efforts to preserve law and justice and a sense of reason among all the people of
Atlanta.
We commend your great courage in taking a personal hand in the control
of these disturbances. Although your appearance at the sc e ne was b eyo nd
the duties expected of the Mayor of Atlanta, ever y citizen should feel deep
pride in what you did. W e do not ask our Mayor to endanger his life or
safety, but having done so, you hav e caused each of us to feel taller as
citizens.
We are, naturally, concerned about the protection of private property,
as well as the lives and well- b e ing of our peopl e. C e rtainly, we commend
any effort toward strengthening th e means of this protec tion within the
fram ew ork of our laws and institutions. Freedom should b e enjoyed by
every citi ze n, but an e ngrain ed s ense of responsibility must be understood
as a qualification of this freedom. The Atlanta R e al Estate Board, its
officers, dir e ctors and members, stand b e hind you and the City Administration in your efforts to further these aims which we all share.
Strong and effective leadership in these times is necessary and we applaud
your exe rcis e of such leadership .
Yours very truly ,

Honorable Ivan Allen, Mayor
City of Atlanta

City Hall

Atlanta, Georgia

Dear Mayor Allen:

On behalf of the officers and directors of the Atlanta Real Estate Board,
I am writing to express the appreciation of the Board for your forthright
actions during the recent rioting in our City. We wish to join with many
others in pledging our support to youin your continuing efforts to pre-
serve law and justice and a sense of reason among all the people of
Atlanta.

We commend your great courage in taking a personal hand in the control
of these disturbances. Although your appearance at the scene was beyond
the duties expected of the Mayor of Atlanta, every citizen should feel deep
pride in what you did. We do not ask our Mayor to endanger his life or
safety, but having done so, you have caused each of us to feel taller as
citizens.

We are, naturally, concerned about the protection of private property,

as well as the lives and well-being of our people. Certainly, we commend
any effort toward strengthening the means of this protection within the
framework of our laws and institutions. Freedom should be enjoyed by
every citizen, but an engrained sense of responsibility must be understood
as a qualification of this freedom. The Atlanta Real Estate Board, its
officers, directors and members, stand behind you and the City Adminis-
tration in your efforts to further these aims which we all share.

Strong and effective leadership in these times is necessary and we applaud
your exercise of such leadership.

Yours very truly,
ATLANTA REAL ESTATE

T he Voitlce o f Atlanta's Conscience

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS the peace and good order of Atlanta were shattered recently by the
street riots in the Capitol Avenue and Boulevard areas of the city; and

WHEREAS there existed violence and racial tension that presented a potential
threat to the entire community, and that did in fact involve the heinous murder of a
Negro youth; now

BE IT RESOLVED, That the Executive Committee of the Greater Atlanta Council of
Churches does hereby look with dismay upon such lawlessness and deplore such needless
killing; and

BE IT RESOLVED, That this Committee commend the Mayor of Atlanta for his prompt,
courageous and effective leadership in controlling the violence and the restoring of
order; the policemen employed in the civil strife for performing their duties
efficiently with due regard to the protection of life and property; and the group of
responsible Negro leaders who answered the call for assistance from the Mayor and
were a major force in turning the tide away from strife and choas.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That we recognize the social ills which exist in our
community and that we encourage and support our civic authorities in their expressed
desire to bring about a greater degree of human dignity and opportunity for under-
privileged elements of our population; that we urge proper regard for law and order
at all times; that we give thanks for the climate of good will and brotherheod which
in large measure has characterized Atlanta; and that earnest prayer be made for the
love of God and the spirit of Christ to enter more fully the hearts of all our people
to the end that better understanding exist between the races and justice and righteous

ness prevail in our relationships one with another.

Dear Mayor Allen:

The Atlanta Jewish Community Council, which represents
virtually all of the adult Jewish organizations in Atlanta,
wishes to commend you and the Police Department for the
manner in which you handled the recent disturbances which
occurred in several sections of Atlanta. We applaud your
courage and statesmanship in dealing with certain destructive
elements in the community and in counselling for the
settlement of problems through good will and understanding.

We are aware, as you are, that there are certain conditions
in the Negro community which may have contributed to these
disorders and which require corrective measures. We are
available to lend our assistance to any constructive program
which may be developed to alleviate conditions and to make
of Atlanta the proud community we all wish it to be.

Please call upon us if we can be of any assistance to you.
