Another thing you did that my wife and I both want to thank you for
is the fine personal letter you sent our son, J. R. Bobo, who was
with the Fire Department until about six weeks ago. He made his
decision to enter Bob Jones University and study religion long before
any trouble erupted with the Firemen, He holds your letter with highest
esteem.
May God bless you and continue to give you strength in running this

It seems a long time since we were at Tech in the early thirties and
even longer when our Mothers were in school together. As time has
changed the Washington Street area of our City it has also given
to our generation glorious opportunities and fearful responsibilities.
It i s always an inspiration to see one who is given an opportunity to
serve his present age to so courageously endeavor to fulfil his duties.
All ministers are not in pulpits, for one is in the Mayors Chair of a
great City and mounts the roof of a car as his pulpit to plead with a
riotous crowd to remember a new commandment, "that we love one another. "
May our prayers for one another be that God will bless and keep us as
His servants for tedious t asks through trying times.

You are very brave and, I am sure, very con-
scientious.
While I admire your fine qualities I am concerned for
your welfare. I would like to site for your consider-
ation several examples of mob violence;
1) The stoning of Stephen - Acts 7:56-58
(They "stopped ther ears" - cast him
out - stoned him)
2) Alexander - Acts 19:34 - the mob cried
for two hours "Great is Diana of the
Ephesians". Mobs will not listen 4
3) Paul - many times beaten, stoned, left
for dead, finally beheaded in Rome.
Some listened but the majority did not |
4) Pilate - saw that he could prevail noth-
ing - washed his hands - Matthew 27:24
For further reference see: Acts 17:5 - an uproar !
Acts 19:29 - the whole city
was filled with confusion !
(and v. 40 - uproar !)
Acts 21:30, 34 "all the city
was moved | "some cried one
thing, some another"
I Cor. 14:33 "For God is not
the author of confusion"
James 3:16 - "confusion and
every evil work"
"Let all things be done decently and in order." I Cor.14:40.
The real trouble is that Christians have failed to get
out the Gospel messase | "Love never faileth" !(I Cor. 13:3)
Now it is a little late for this approach. They

My main regret ib that this isn't 20 years ago, and you were just starting

Since my wife ond I would 1 rmuch to continue coming into Atlanta
on periodic shopping trips, I feel you should be made aware of certain con-
ditions now prevalent which prohibi > doing so.
The small groups cf Negro you stand idly on street corners and
| shout obscenities at passing white sts are definitely not conducive to
good relationship between Atlanta and neighboring cities.
The strong possibility of a t c or bottle being tossed into a windshield
holds absolutely no attraction for me, or eny other law abiding citizen,
Sooner or later an enraged motorist will lose control of his senses, and
someone else will die; another riot will ensue, and more hatred will build,
Friends tell me that Negro youths saunter idly across streets in front
of passing wake in many sections of your city, and seemingly dare drivers to
run them down. When a horn is sounded, these Negro youths scream curses, aided
by groups of adults on the sidewalks, ‘
Being an admirer of your excellent tenure of office, I feel you should
lmow these things are happening in Atlanta, and that more and more people are
becoming disenchanted with your city because of them.
