Mr. Ivan Allen, Mayor
City of Atlanta, Georgia
Dear Mayor Allen,

Please allow us to add our comments to the gyowing number of
them, that are no doubt coming across your desk these weeks after your
recent confrontation with the sorry issue that has come to pass in the
wonderful city of Atlanta.

Although, living in DeKalb County, we are not actual residents of
the city, what affects Atlanta very much affects us in the outer limits.
Having lived over thirty-five years in the city of Pittsburgh before
coming to the Atlanta area five years ago, we feel that we can speak
for the situations in the northern cities with some authority.

Let the colored people here know they get a much fairer shake here
in Atlanta than they would ever get in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Chicage
or wherever. It is high time that the truth of the situations be told -
in the news media throughout the country.

We thank you, Mayor Allen for your courage in going into the
confusion and bringing about rapid order from the chaos. The Police
Department indeed deserves a medal of honor... particularly the
colored police who were very much in evidence at the situation.

This situation, covered in depth by the television, radio and
the news magazines will be a real eye opener for those whose hobby is
to give a “black-eye" to the south. Where were the Mayors of Chicago,
Dayton, and wherever when confusion reigns? At their desk with the
phone - far from the ecene.

In aaél correspondence and phone calls we have had from our families
and friends throughout Pennsylvania and Ohie, the constant comment was
"Hats off to your Mayor down there - he sure doesn't stand for much
jazz", does he??

Maybe Atlanta*s image cam be the beginning of a good show to
bring about the ending of this traveling disruption of all our major
cities in this country. Tell us, Mayor Allen, what can Mr. and Mrs.
Average Citizen, do to help you?

Sincerely, Rte das, eee id .

These marches, demonstrations, riotings, lootings, police
slayings and the such makes me literally sick, especially the
reasons our Government officials are trying to cram down

our throats as causes of these law-breaking episodes.

and ‘ofte-half inches shorter than my right and about one
third the size.

My father died at 6 p.m. Sunday in 1935, was buried
Monday on my seventeenth birthday. My brother died at
5 a.m. Tuesday and was buried Wednesday, leaving me
with two-small sisters and my mother to support.

At 17 I was not a drop-out in school. With no education
—not enough, anyway—no experience and with only one
good leg, I quit school and went to work to support a fami-
ly. I didn’t have a teen-age life because my working hours
were always from 10 to 20 hours a day. In 1948, I got my
right hand—my working hand; I'm right- handed—in an elec-

Honorable Ivan Allen, Jr., Mayor
City of Atlanta

Atlanta City Hall

Atlanta, Georgia

Dear Mayor Allens

I congratulate you on your splendid efforts to maintain racial
harmony in the City of Atlanta. Your recent confrontation with
rioting Negro mobs was most admirable. However, I am afraid
that you do not understand Negro psychology.

On numerous occasions you have made reference to the grave in-
justices the Negro has suffered over the past 200 years - and
this I cannot agree with entirely. The greatest favor ever done
for the Negro was to capture him, take him out of the jungle

end expose him to civilization - and incidentally, keep him from
eating all of his relatives. These supposed injustices confer on
him no right to murder, rape, mug and commit arson. If this were
not true I would personally carry out a vendeta against society
because General Sherman's men murdered my great-grandfather, his
oldets son (16), burned his home, killed his live-stock and left
a widow with three little-.children, This indeed was an injustice
but it does not give the right to go to Chicago and throw bottles
at the police force, kill local residents or set fire to the
Conrad Hilton Hotel.

While on active duty, during World War II, we had a constant
problem with Quartermaster Negro troops rioting after consuming

a few bottles of beer. I was assigned the task of breaking up
these Saturday night melees and I accomplished the mission in
just two weeks. It was not done by talking nicely to these men,
it was done however with a language that they understand. I urge
you to use a firmer hand in dealing with these situations or face
the alternative of losing complete control of the situation.

I am gravely concerned with the state of anarchy that prevails
throughout the nation. Unless our political leaders exercise firm
controls, without regards for the value of the Negro bloc vote at
the polls, the United States is going to develop into an armed
Camp and we will all lose as the result of what will take place,
Put down revolt among the Negroes as you would if white people
were involved and you will overcome some of the deep-rooted and
seething resentment that now exists.

With best wishes for your continued efforts in geting with this
gigantic problem, I am ~

City of Atlanta Court House
68 Mitchell Street,S.E.
Atlanta, Georgia

Dear Mayor Allen,

My wife and I were in your campaign: headquarters on the night of
your first election as mayor of Atlanta. We gave you our support.
You have more than lived up to the expectations that we had in you
as a@ person and your administration. As you can see by the address,
We are now serving in Albany, Georgia. Our hearts remain in Atlanta
and we hope some day to return to serve again.

Your recent heartache and frustration over the sudden outburst of
violence is also ours. Your courage to enter the areas of trouble

and attempt to minister to the people is most compassionate. We deeply
appreciate your stand for law and order and at the same time justice
for white and black. Please keep your faith and remember the poem

by Kipling "If you can trust yourself when all men about you doubt
you" ( misquoted), "You will be a man my son.". Mayor Allen you are
indeed a man,

I wish that I had an easy answer. I wish that you did. You said
that we needed to build better cities. I agree but even more basic
we need to build better people. All of this is an inditement of the
Church and our failure to become what God intended us to become.
Parents, teachers, everyone of us is involved or should be and should
have been.

My prayers are with you, your family, your administration, and with
the friends as well as enemies of your basic principles of government.
They are sound and only imperfect as each of us as human beings are

Dear Mr. Mayor:
You have earned the gratitude and admiration of people throughout this region and indeed throughout the nation for your handling
of the tense situation on the streets of Atlanta last Tuesday evening.
You have helped to establish an image of Atlanta as a city, not
of prejudice, but of progress. You have worked conscientiously and
effectively for social justice, economic opportunity and fair treatment for all citizens.
When, despite your best efforts, tensions reached a breaking
point, you moved with resolute courage, tempered by reason and
restraint, to protect your city against some of its citizens and, in
fact, to protect these people against some of their own temporary
excesses.
We realize that your magnificent performance on this occasion does
not insure against a recurrence of violence in Atlanta. I am sure , too,
that you can take little pleasure in commendations for your handling of
a situation which you undoubtedly hoped would never occur. Still , we
should be permitted to express our pride i n a cap t ain who ke eps h i s ship

Best wishes for a successful voyage and safe landing from an old

Dear Mr. Mayor:

You have earned the gratitude and admiration of people through-

You have helped to establish an image of Atlanta as a city, not

We realize that your magnificent performance on this occasion does

that you can take little pleasure in commendations for your handling of
a situation which you undoubtedly hoped would never occur, Still, we

Dear Yvan:

lhe niots in Atlanta this week were one og the most un-
gortunate developments in the history og our native erty, but J
wank Lo compliment you on your splendid handling of this di¢fi-
cult situation. Your judgment and courage were adminable and
when 9 speak of courage I am not Apeaking og the gact that vou
merely went into the middle og dhe mob, but Y am Apeaking parti-~
cularly og your courage in taking the position that you took
during the riot as well as in uvour handling og! the situation
Later. 9 believe that your aciions will have a tremendous
influence fon good with the civic and state authorities through-
out the nation.

AU thinking men who are not 4o terrigied of a block vote
that thein backbone disappears, know that everthing that we
cherish in this country 44 dependent upon Law and orden,
seems that some of our northern cities Ahould be in the “banana
nepublics”, and 9 am particularly gratified to see that your
yim hand has been strongly approved by the northern press as
well as the Congress. Gt is also gratigving to see that 4o
many, og the night thinking negroes, particularly in Atlanta,
have thought that you handled the situation well,

9 think that your Atlania Congressman made a very good
statement when he said that no matier how we quibble about the
meaning of "bLlach power”, at inevitably heads to violence. for-
tunately, very jew of either nace believe in “black power",
“white power, on any other kind of power that connotes violence.

G nemember that two weeks ago when we were Attting on
your porch at /oxaway you, Laughingly, told how a man in
pubLic Life grabs the newspaper early an the morning 40 see
what they are AaUANG about him, so 9 know you are happy about
what you have read, And Let me add, that when this happened
GY was in Hlonida and the press there was unanimous in your

savor.
Many foins me in best wishes to you and to Louise.

S incenrely,
