This conference will deal with Expanding Employment Opportunities in private industry for unemployed and underemployed individuals. The Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Allen are cooperating with the Task Force on Private Employment of the Urban Coalition in this conference. Top business executives from throughout the Eastern U. S. will participate. Some of the firms who will take part in the workshop discussions are RCA, Eastman Kodak, R. J. Reynolds, G. E., and Ford. There are others, along with the National Association of Manufacturers, Urban League and local business executives and employment people, Of key importance to the Atlanta people will be the "premier" of a slide film presentation recently developed on Atlanta's employment picture. This film was produced by the City of Atlanta, the Chamber of Commerce, EOA, the Community Council and Community Chest with financial support of the Sears-Roebuck Foundation. SWEAT, JR., Director of Governmental Liaison To: Urban Coalition Steering Committee From: Dan Sweat The Private Employment Task Force of the National Urban Coalition has scheduled a regional conference on expanding private employment in Atlanta on December 13. The conference will last for the better part of the day and will involve nationally known business officials and others who will discuss ways their companies have helped to reduce unemployment or provide additional job opportunities and advancement for the low-income people. As part of our local contribution to the program, it has been suggested that the slide program on employment developed by the Human Resources group be presented to the Coalition meeting. This Human Resources group is made up of representatives of the City of Atlanta, Community Council, Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, and Economic Opportunity Atlanta, Inc, The slide program has been developed over the last eighteen months period and is designed to present to the private businessman of Atlanta the picture on unemployment and programs designed to combat the problem. A preview of the slide program has been scheduled for 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 8, in Committee Room 1 of City Hall, , The Mayor and other members of the Local Coalition Steering Committee are being invited to attend to critique the presentation along with Bob Wood of the Merit Employers Association and one or two other con- cerned individuals. I would hope that we would be able to complete workshop sessions in the mgrning and end in a general session with a late lunch without reconvening for workshop sessions in the afternoon, With every work- shop conference I have attended, including the recent Coalition meeting in Chicago, we have always lost our audience in the afternoon and I believe this would be the case in Atlanta where you are involving key businessmen. I would suggest starting about 9:30 with a general session with welcome remarks by the Mayor and a keynote stage setting address by Phillippe, Henry Ford or someone of this order. Workshop sessions would convene about 10:30 or 11;00 and run until 12:30. These might be broken into two workshop periods for each participant, Luncheon would begin about 12:45 with the program to commence about 1:30 or 1:45. I would like to see the Atlanta color slide presentation on manpower programs, problems, etc. presented by the key Chamber of Commerce official with maybe time for a few questions or comments from the floor following this. This would take about 48 minutes total.
