Dear Sir:
This letter is written to express to you my personal sympathy for your
seemingly insurmountable task as Mayor of this great city.
Recently, I received your fine letter expressing the desire that as a
part of the Opening Day celebration of Major League baseball in the
South, I invite top officials of my company to Atlanta for the weekend of April 9- 10 - 11- 12. The idea behind the invitation was great, in
that it would give industrial and commerc ial comp any representatives
the opportunity to show off Atlanta - the azaleas, the dogwood, the
redbud - all in bloom, a parade, a dinner honoring the Braves , an d the
magic o f Opening Day - what a way to entertain business l e aders who co ntrol or influence so much of the natio n 's prosperity. What a way to sell
these leaders on Atlanta, on Georgia, and the future of both - a really
major league effort and opportunity.
What a shame ..... what a pity, that the of ficialdom o f the Augusta
National and their management of the Masters are so minor league as to
black out te levi sion of their event.
My sympathies, Mr. Mayor .• ..• You will h ave a city full of guests in every
hotel, i n many liv ing rooms, and minor league Augusta National spoils
your beautiful party.
My congratulations for your determined efforts despite the rural legislation and low candle power thinking of some of your inert fellow citizens
over the state.
Sincerely,

Dear Sir:

This letter is written to express to you my personal sympathy for your
seemingly insurmountable task as Mayor of this great city.

Recently, I received your fine letter expressing the desire that as a
part of the Opening Day celebration of Major League baseball in the
South, I invite top officials of my company to Atlanta for the week-

end of April 9-10-11-12. The idea behind the invitation was great, in
that it would give industrial and commercial company representatives

the opportunity to show off Atlanta - the azaleas, the dogwood, the
redbud - all in bloom, a parade, a dinner honoring the Braves, and the
magic of Opening Day - what a way to entertain business leaders who con-
trol or influence so much of the nation's prosperity. What a way to sell
these leaders on Atlanta, on Georgia, and the future of both - a really
major league effort and opportunity.

What a shame..... what a pity, that the officialdom of the Augusta
National and their management of the Masters are so minor league as to
black out television of their event.

My sympathies, Mr. Mayor.....You will have a city full of guests in every
hotel, in many living rooms, and minor league Augusta National spoils
your beautiful party.
My congratulations for your determined efforts despite the rural legis-
lation and low candle power thinking of some of your inert fellow citizens
over the state,

Sincerely,

Dear Ivan:
In line with our 'phone conversation of this morning, Mrs. Barr
and I will be taking United Flight Number 473 on Monday morning, April 11th, at
eight-thirty and will arrive in Atlanta at ten o'clock.
I understand that you have arranged for accommodations for us
at the Marriott Hotel. We are both self-sufficient, so please do not put yourself out. I know how busy you are with the affairs of the City and the extra
curricular duties connected with the opening of the baseball season in Atlanta.
We have accepted the formal invitation for the dinner on Monday evening and Alice and I are looking forward to the oppor tunity of visiting
with you and Mrs . Allen at that time.
Our reason f or arriving so early is t hat my wife is not a
good f lier and the only jet flight we can take, in order to get there in time
for t h e dinner on Monday evening , is at 8:30 in the morning .
I have made arrangements to leave there on Wednesday, Apri l 13th
at twelve noon on Unit ed Flight Number 384.
I think t he a dvent of Major League Ba-s eba ll t o Atlant a and t h e
whole southeast will be a great boon to our national pastime . I only hope that
you are as strong a baseball f an a s I am, a s t he owner ship and management of the
Pirates are per sona l f r iends of mine.
As you are perhaps aware, we are in the midst of building a new
stadium in Pittsburgh for the Pirates and the Pittsburgh Steelers Football team.
With k i nd regards t o you and Mrs . Allen, and looking forward to
seeing both of you on t h e 11th, I am

              <text>JOSEPH M. BARR

MAYOR GITY OF PITTSBURGH

March 31, 1966

Hon. Ivan Allen, Jr.
Mayor
Atlanta, Georgia.

We are both self-sufficient, so please do not put your-
self out. I know how busy you are with the affairs of the City and the extra
curricular duties connected with the opening of the baseball season in Atlanta.

We have accepted the formal invitation for the dinner on Mon-
day evening and Alice and I are looking forward to the opportunity of visiting
with you and Mrs. Allen at that time.

Our reason for arriving so early is that my wife is not a
good flier and the only jet flight we can take, in order to get there in time
for the dinner on Monday evening, is at 8:30 in the morning.

T have made arrangements to leave there on Wednesday, April 13th
at twelve noon on United Flight Number 384,

I think the advent of Major League Baseball to Atlanta and the
whole southeast will be a great boon to our national pastime. I only hope that
you are as strong a baseball fan as I am, as the ownership and management of the
Pirates are personal friends of mine.

As you are perhaps aware, we are in the midst of building a new
stadium in Pittsburgh for the Pirates and the Pittsburgh Steelers Football team,

With kind regards to you and Mrs. Allen, and looking forward to
seeing both of you on the 11th, I am

Dear Mayor Allen:

I want you to know how much my wife and I
enjoyed the dinner for the Atlanta Braves
last evening. You were most generous to
furnish us with tickets for this occasion..
It was a brilliant occasion, and I was
extremely proud of our Mayor.

I think the stadium should be named "IVAN
