Dear Mayor Allen:

I was delighted to hear your statement in regard
to nomination of Lester Maddox as the Democratic

I was born and raised in Atlanta, and I have lived
in West Palm Beach for approximately ten years.
However, I am a member of the Young Democrates of
Florida and I am naturally interested in what is going
on in my home town in the way of politics.

I was shocked to learn of the outcome of the
Democratic primary, but your statement, which I heard
on television that night was some consolation. I have
to admire you for stating what you believe is right,
which is more than can be said for Mr. Maddox. I am

that if Lester Maddox is elected governor of Georgia,
it will be the greatest set-back Georgia has had.

A personal reply when you have time will be
greatly appreciated. I had to tell you how much
I admire you for your statement last week.

Thank you very much for your time.

Very truly yours,

Dear Mr. Mayor:

As graduate students at the University of Georgia and "adopted"
Georgians we feel compelled to write this note of appreciation
and support. Your stand during the recent civil rights distur-
bances in Atlanta and your courageous, non-theatrical exposure

of your person at the scene of the disturbances are, in our
opinion, without precedent. We also have preat admiration for

your stand on the Maddox situation, and appreciate the difficult
position your courage and integrity forces you to take.

Though a minor point, we would like to tell you that Stokeley
Carmichael's public descriptions of you as "King Ivan" and "Race
Czar" brought, to our personal knowledge, nothing but contempt
for his ridiculous charade,

Thank you very much, Mr. Mayor. You have our support as well as
our admiration.

Yours truly, Pe Grnuiuiet

Dear Mayor Allen:

In this morning's paper I read of your horrified reaction to Lester
Maddox's victory in the runoff, and I felt compelled to write you and
tell you how much I share your feelings. I have never before felt such
horrified disbelief coupled with such profaund sadness. The contest be-

sahe racist; that's all. Maybe I'll go fishing on election day, too,

I've onLy lived in Atlanta for two years, but I think you've been
doing a wonderful job as mayor, and I've been particularly delighted with
your thoughtful and enlightened attitude towards racial matters. When
you and other guests sang "We Shall Overcome" at the testimonial dinner
for Martin Iuther King, jr. after he won the Nobel Prize, I remember think-
ing how few northern mayors, let alone southern ones, would have the guts
to do something like that, i was Similarly impressed with the thoughtful
and yet firm manner in which you handled the recent racial disturbances
in Atlanta,

I'm certain that your intelligent and understanding outlook on racial
matters will probably get you into many scraps with our next governor,
be it Maddox or Calloway, and I, just want you to know that here are two
more Georgians -— my wife - who will be behind you one hundred
per cent.

New York’s new newspaper—The World Journal Tribipe—|,

While the makeup leans to
that of the old World-Telegram,
it does not duplicate it. Some of
the format suggests the former

more effectively kill a newspa-

in this category, is tops.
NUMEROUS FIRSTS

It is also tops in many other
ways. Enumerating some of
these—and all are earmarks of

you were praised for you courageous sction during the
recent riots, you were spoken of the mayor with "guts."
If enyone had any doubts sbout the amount of "guts" you

took more courege to denowve this man than to stand on
top of e cer and face the unruly mob (no smell trickyn iT SELF,
mind you). But, here, you did not go slong with the
PIG ROYS. When it came your turn, you stood up end sain,
"No Thanks, I'm not having any."
This must be a bitter pill for you to swallow.
I'm sure you have worked so hard to bring Atlenta up to
the high standard and reputation she now enjoys. I, too,
believe that Georgia will take a gient step backward,
snd whet e shame She hes so much going for her. I
feel a great many people are looking to you for some
kind of leadership right now. If you "go fishing" on
Election Day, you can bet that leke is going to be very
crowded with fellow fishermen. All democrets who now
stand adrift, betwixt and between, need you to show them
the way. What a challenge to lead, but, you, Sir, are
the man for the job.

Most, sincerely,

Atlanta, Ga.

Dear Mr. Allen:

I am a law student at Emory and have met you on several
occasions in connection with my friendship with your son
Inman.

I seldom write letters to public officials, but at this
time when events have been so discouraging for our city and
state, I feel a duty to extend my support to you and express
my confidence in your leadership.

My wife and I were visiting in New York City during the
first two weeks in September. As the news of the Summerhill
and Boulevard disturbances unfolded, your initiative and
courage were not only reassuring but made me very proud to
be able to say that I was an Atlantan.

I further believe that the nomination of Lester Maddox
not only justified your subsequent statement but demanded it.
It is a sad commentary on the leadership of our state that
you alone had the integrity to denounce this most dangerous
mane

The withdrawal of Congressman Weltner has raised the sug=
gestion that you may seek election to this seat. In any
capacity in which you decide to serve our city, My wife Jane
and I extend to you our greatest respect and our willingness
to contribute to your work in any way in which we are able.

Yours truly,

Harry L. Delung, Jr.

Dear Mayor Allen:

It is, indeed, heartening to know that you have
the wonderful fortitude to express your true
convictions, irrespective of political entagle-

my congratulations and my appreciations. You
deserve everything that is good in life for being
