Dear Sir:
Your recent statements over national television have created
such a resentment in me that I can not help but express to
you my utter contempt for such a statement. I happen to be
one of the half million white Georgians that you denounce
as being ignorant , irresponsible , full of bigotry and prejudice. I think such a statement from the Mayor of Atlanta
shows utter irrespo nsibility. You have done more damage to
the Democratic party and to the cause of the negro in Georgia
by such a statement than anything else.
If you really feel that Mr . Maddox is so unqualified to be
governor of Georgia I suggest you sµpport Mr. Callaway as
governor unless you place all Republicans in the same catagory
as those referred to above. I can not help but make this expression to you direct.

<text>If this nation is to survive and prevail during the
next century in its life-or-death struggle against Communism,
its most vital single asset must be the mental and moral
strength of its children. Yet, we are faced today with the
tragic picture of callous, selfish, national politicians
bartering away this priceless possession in a frantic race
to gratify minority pressure groups and to present to the
rest of the world an illusory image portraying the United
States as a classless society.

Despite the shameful aftermath of school integration
in New York City and Washington, D. C., despite incontro-
vertible statistics showing that the per capita-crime rate
among negroes is at least ten times as great as that of the
whites, the Federal juggernaut robls exexorably forward,
as though following a blueprint to miscegenation, grinding
States Rights into the dust and mocking the ideal of govern-
ment by p@wers derived from consent of the governed. —

. Must the South suffer a Congolese debacle, must every
_ white girl be ravished, must every white boy be felled by

a spring-blade knife, must the white race be degraded to
the mire of sensualism, before the stark, elemental truth
is acknowledged...oc..ethat there is a vast difference which
has nothing to do with color of the skin?

I had the misfortune of spending the first twenty years
of my life in close association with negroes and for five
of those years ours was the only white family within a radius
of a half-mile on every side. That, I am sure, is a more
comprehensive background than than of the nine Supreme Court
justices and Myrdal, the exotic new fountainhead of American
jurisprudence. Needless to say, I intend to spare my children
a similar unedifying apprenticeship, even if it entails trans-
ferring them from parochial schools to private schools, and,
if necessary, dissolving my business and moving to a western
state (Califormmia excluded). It is difficult enough to rear
children properly today, besieged as they are by the tempting,
lurid fare of TV, movies, and mgazines, without further
exposing them to perilous association withWwoung negroes who
have been whelped in the sordid environ of incest, illegitimacy,
unbridled sex without love, syphillis and gonorrhea, and addic-
tion to gin, marijuana, muscatel wine, and the latest panacea,
heavily drugged cough syrup.
Page 2

The typical young negro male believes that his only
reason for existence is the riotous indulgence of his
genital organs. The average young negress is the very
symbol of promiscuity. If this genocidal program of
school integration is pursued, you can be sure that most
while children will have been indoctrinated to the facts
of life before the age of ten in the moust uncouth, vulgar
manner confeivable. I do not hate the individual negro
but, considered ethnically, they are the dregs of humanity
and that condition will be changed only by painfully slow
evolution, not by reams of mandates from Washington, D. C.,
proclaiming “egality™,

I have little doubt about the outcome of the pending
if only because of the pragmatic reason that the central
government has mxe tanks and bayonets than the states
and that immense, elastic tarpaulin, "Equal Protection
of the Law", can always be stretched a bit more. Your
tenure in this world will expire in the nextfwenty or
twenty-five fleeting years, at most, and you must face
the Supreme Arbiter. I devoutly hope that you can justify
your rulings at that times.

Dear Friends:

I sincerely wish that I could answer your wonderful
letter supporting my stand against civil disobedience

difficult.

Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your words of
encouragement during our City's hour of trial and peril.
I will always fight for the preservation of the rights

Dear Sir;

In reference to your recent statement you made concerning Mr, Lester
Maddox( Democratic Nominee For Governor), I wish to enter a strong protest
to you personally for your statement you made to the people of Ga," that
he was elected by the combined forces of ignorance, prejudice, reactionisn,

right to vote is my God given right of our Constitution and I consider ny
not ignorant but three years of high school education here in Augusta,
and it may be true that I do not have the political knowsb-how in politics
as you may possess and I consider it a disgrace to the people of our good
tate of Ga, for you to make a public statement" calling the people of Ga,
ignorant because they voted for Mr. Maddéx". In my opinion you owe the people
of @a, an apology for making a statement as that, I vote for whom I want to
vote for and I certainly do not appreciate if some one called me ignorant
because I did not vote for their hand picked candidate, I am a World War II
veteran and we fought for the right to vote as we please and I think you
should apologize for the recent statement you made, Mr, Allen, fer your
information I do not claim te posses all the brains that are to be had and
I am certainly not a "crank" but a statement such as this from the mayor of
our capitol city of Atlanta Ga, certainly "shakes me up". There are plenty of
citizens here in Augusta also take exception to your statement and the¢ too
want to inform you that they are not stupid or ignorant as your statement may
imply. I voted for Mr, lester Maddox in the Democratic run off and if the good
lord is willing, I intend to certainly vote for Mr. Maddox in the general election
in November, I do not say that people are ignorant because my candidate lost,
I feel like that if that is what the majority want it is alright with me. I an
not a Republican and have always voted the Democratic ticke¥” so do not accuse me
of being a Republican, I am not a rabbi ~ rouser so do not accuse me of being a
hate - monger, and I am certainly not imcometent as I have a fairly good education,
I would like to suggest to you that in the future if your candidate should lose, do
not call the people ignorant because they did not vote your way, I would like to
know," Who do you think you are calling me stupid, ignorant, and imedbetent because
I did not vote for your candidate". I only wish I were a citizen of Atlanta where
I could vote against you, but according to you, I am ignorant because I did not vote

Mr. Ivan Allen
Office of the Mayor
Atlanta, Georgia
My
dear Mayor:
On yesterday, Thursday the 29th, I listenend with amazement t o the
television broadcast and read in the Washington Post this morning of your
statement concerning the nomination of Mr. I.ester Maddox as the Democratic
candidate for Governor of Georgia.
While I am not a resident or a voter in your state, I cannot refrain,
as a United States citizen and a voter of the State of North Carolina and
one who all his .life bas been interested in and supported the Democratic
party, from writing you to express my feelings with respect to your comments.
In my hU11ble opinion, you have slandered and case unfair aspers i ons
on the intelligence, sense and honesty of purpose of over 425,000 citizens
of Georgia who cast their votes fDr Mr. Maddox.
It is unfortunate that a public official such as yourself would take
such an attitude and speak out in the manner that you have in the face of
the strong mandate of the voters expressing their choice.
Your hasty and unwarranted expressions give a new insight into your
extreme views and you certainly have disqualified yourself from any further
public service by such derogatory comments about your own citizens.
I shall look forward with pleasure and anticipation to the time when
you next seek re-election as the mayor of the fine city of Atlanta in the
sincere hope that the "idiots, rabblerousers, fools", etc. as you described
them, will pass j udgment on

Dear Sirs

I believe you owe an apology to Governor-nominee Lester Maddox
and the several hundred thousand Georgians who voted for him.
Your post election statement with its intemperate, contemptible,
and slurring remarks was deplorable and certainly lacking in
wisdom, justice, or moderation.

The fact that this reckless statement was carried on nation-
wide television is a blot on the good name of the City of Atlanta.

It would have been far better to have suppressed your apparent
bitter feeling of resentment that another Atlantan would beat

you to the governor's mansion.

Honoreble Mayor Ivan Allen
Mayor, City of Atlanta
Atlanta, Georg La

Dear Mr, Mayor:
ed with dismay your comments on CBS Reports 'Black Fower-

sh,' Tuesday September 27, 1966.

I view
White Backls

Your remark that Georgia went Republican in 196)
because of the white backlash was a most unfortunate, un-cslled for,
irresponsible statement of the rankest sort,

Such a statement does greet injustice to the Republican Farty
of Georgia in general and the people of Georgia in particular.
Your inference seems to be only those votes with racial overtones

were cast for Barry Goldwater. This is what all doctinaire liberals
would ae ‘to think. I personally feel you owe the people of Georgia

e
an apology for your insinuation that they are not discerning

I suggest to.y eorgia went Republican in 1964 "Entirely" in
repudistion of Lynd Bal ne s Johnson and Hubert Horatio Humphrey and
their socialistic, w are, givaway schemes of the "Grest Society."

WDsb Walt Davis
F.S. In view of recent Democratic nominetion, suggest you
vote Hepublicsn Nev. 3.

Dear Mr. Allen:
From your recent press conference, you implied that this is
not a fr ee country. You were v e ry upset and made a lot of

REINSURANCE BROKERS & MGRS.

October 3, 1966

Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr.
City Hall
Atlanta, Georgia

Dear Mr. Allen:

From your recent press conference, you implied that this is
not a free country. You were very upset and made a lot of
nasty remarks because the people voted of their own choice
for Mr. Maddox in the primary election. Further, you said
the majority of the people who voted for Mr. Maddox were
illiterate and ignorant.

This is simply to advise I voted for Mr. Maddox, and even
though I do not have a 180 I.Q., I don't believe I'm ignorant.

The people of Georgia do not respect you very much, and every
time you and the Atlanta newspapers talk against Mr. Maddox,
you are just adding more votes to his election.

You mentioned that Mr. Maddox was not qualified for the job.
However, if you will recall, I don't think you were qualified
for the Mayor's job when you went into office.

I realize you were under duress by your Negro voters and were

trying to pacify them by remarking as you did. However, these
remarks were certainly uncalled for.

Honorable’Ivan Allen Jr.,
City Hall
Atlanta, Georgia.

Dear Mayor Allen:

If I could have my choice Mr. Maddox would not be Georgiats-next Governors
but thanks to you and Ellis Arnall, I am almost certain that he will be
occupying the new mansion next year. Mr. Arnallts strike below the belt
gave him many thousands of votes which no doubt was responsible for his
large victory in the run off, and followed by a similar blow on your part
is sufficient to place him in the Governor's chair.

If I understood you correctly, you also saw fit to classify all of the
people who voted for Mr. Maddox as extremist, biased and ignorant. It

has in the past seemed to be very proper for a block of ignorant and

biased people to vote for you. If I would hazard a guess you would have
never been Mayor of Atlanta had it not been for the negro block vote, which
certainly can be classed as biased if not ignorant. ey may have had a
perfect right to vote as they did, but this same right, without criticism,
should be granted to other people.

There seems to be a great deal of criticism also about some republicans
voting for Mr, Maddox, Granting this to be true, if the situation had
been reversed, snd these republicans had voted for Mr. Arnall would there
have been much criticism by his followers-- I doubt it.

I hear a great deal these days about extremism. Just what is an extremist?
An extremist seems to be a person that has viewsof his own and opposite to
the person who yells exbremist. If I remember correctly, Christ had no
patience with a luke warm person or you might say a middlo of the roader.

I am just an individual with no ax to grind-- just sitting on the side

lines and trying to take in what transpires daily, and the above in a
degree expresses my reaction,

Very sincerely,

hte aniele ak
