A FEW WORDS
ON WELTNER

To the Editor of The Herald:

This Weltner boy, a Repre-
sentative in the House of Rep-
resentatives from the 3rd Dis-
trict of Georgia, and nominee
of the Democratic primary to
succeed himself, has announced
that he will not serve further
as the Representative from the
3rd District of Georgia.

This action of Weltner’s is
indeed a step in the right di-
Tection. It would be ‘just fine
if every office holder in the
United States who holds to the
philosophy such as Weltner’s
would follow suit.

It is quite easy to understand
the reason back of Weltner’s ac-
tion. I refer to the true reason;
not the reason he made public.
Had he seen fit to adhere to
the truth, he would have said
that he is taking this action be-
cause he has been a miserable
failure; that he is seeing, day
by day, a disintegration of all
that he has worked so hard for.

Weltner forfeited the respect
and confidence of all white peo-
ple and a majority of Negro
people in the section of the
country he calls home, because
of his activity in favor of Civil
Rights legislation. Now he
finds himself a man without a
country; a man without a
friend. Quite naturally this
state of affairs has caused him
to become despondent, which he
now evidences by his action in
refusing to try to go on as
Representative from the 3rd
District of Georgia.

I believe that the reason
Weltner gives for his action is
the flimsiest I ever heard, and
it has no semblance of truth
in it. He says that he has to
take this action because of the
loyalty oath which the Demo-
crats require every candidate to
take, and which Weltner took.
Weltner seems to want people
to think that by the action
which he is taking, he is no
longer bound by the oath he
took. He swore that he would
Support every nominee of the
Democratie party, and he af-

fixed his signature thereto, Any
subsequent action by him can-
not in any way affect an oath
which he had previously taken.
If Weltner is looking for a
job, I suggest that he apply at
a broadeasting company for a
job as news commentator. They
might appreciate his talents
there.

Open Letter To Mayor Allen
Dear Sir:
We were never as shocked in our
lives as we were when we read
the cruel, childish, bigot remarks
of the Mayor of the "great" City
of Atlanta in your statement about
the election of Lester Maddox as
Democratic Nominee for Governor .
You know by now that you are
among the minority who think the
nomination of Lester Maddox for
Governor is ' 'deplorable, and as
for the "seal of the great State of
Georgia" being tarnished, such
was the case when you were
elected Mayor of Atlanta . On that
date, the "seal of the City of At.:.
lanta was tarnished" upon your
becoming Mayor by the " colored"
votes that elected you. The White
People of the State of Georgia
have spoken and you refuse to
listen. Your opinion is only one
against millions. You are denying
all Geor gians the cho ice of electing who they want to head the
State. That, in our opinion, is
- dictator sh ip. If you and Martin
Luther King a re asha med to be
called Geor gians, all we can s ay
to you is this , " There is no fence
around the State of Georgia and
you are free to leave whenever
you want to, " and we are sure no
one would be seen crying when you
go, except your Negro supporters. Maybe you can take them with
you ?
We do not appreciate being call ed ignorant! We make up our own
minds , as do the ma jority of the
people , for whom we wish to vote:
You have the s ame r ight, but jus t
because your "Golden Boy " didn't
win, you act like a SELFIS H
..
CHILD. We lost our votes when we
voted for Mayor, too, but we didn •t
act like SELFISH CHILDREN
about it, like you are doing now.
Mr. Allen, if you plan to "go fishing" on November 8th and Lester Maddox wins, which he has a
ver y good chance of doing, you
s hould keep your mouth shut and
leave the choice up to the voters.
This is wh at you s hould have done
this time! We all !mow there is
nothing wor se than a politican
who is lost, except a politican
who sells his soul for a vote. We
realize you are in a vulnerable
position and that if you do not
scream loud enough for the
colored voters to support you in a
bloc type vote, then you know you
are lost as a politician.
YES, MR. ALLEN, we read yo ur
statement to the press, and you
have had your "say." Now, we, as
an independent group of people,
not "backed" by any organization, feel we have the r ight to
our opinions and to our .choice as
to who we want for Governor,
AND WE ARE GOING TO HAVE
IT IN NOVE MBER!!!
MR. ALLEN, WHAT ARE YOU
AFRAID OF ?!!!
Sincerely,
Mr s. G. Gilley
Mr s . c. Moore

We do not appreciate being call-
ed ignorant! We make up our own
minds, as do the majority of the
people, for whom we wish to vote.
You have the same right, but just
because your ‘‘Golden Boy’? didn’t
win, you act like a SELFISH

Open Letter To Mayor Allen

CHILD, We lost our votes when we
voted for Mayor, too, but we didn’t
act like SELFISH CHILDREN
about it, like you are doing now.
Mr. Allen, if you planto ‘‘gofish-
ing’? on November 8th and Les-
ter Maddox wins, which he has a
very good chance of doing, you
should keep your mouth shut and
leave the choice up to the voters.
This is what you should have done
this time! We all know there is
nothing worse than a politican
who is lost, except a politican |
who sells his soul for a vote. We
realize you are in a vulnerable
position and that if you do not
scream loud enough for the
colored voters to support youina
bloc type vote, then you know you
are lost as a politician.

YES, MR. ALLEN, we read your
statement to the press, and you
have had your ‘“‘say.’’ Now, we, as
an independent group of people,
not ‘backed’? by any organiza-
tion, feel we have the right to
our opinions and to our choice as
to who we want for Governor,
AND WE ARE GOING TO HAVE
IT IN NOVEMBER!!!

MR, ALLEN, WHAT. ARE YOU
AFRAID OF 2!!!

Sincerely,
Mrs. G, Gilley
Mrs. C, Moore
Atlanta

How shameful it is for a man
of Ivan Allen's position to label

he thought of the Atlanta citi- .

I wonder what he thinks of
these free - thinking Americans
who voted for Earry Goldwater
for president?
Is it true that Ivan Allen has

uddenly become God and can

pass judgment on the people of
Georgia for the choice they
made in a free election?
Is Ivan Allen so little to condemn the people of his own state
and yet so big that he can go
on national television and apologize to the nation for th\! "mistake" that his people have
made?
,
Is he a "Moses' called to lead
the people of Georgia into the
promised land? Or does he realize that many God-fearing Georgians believe that this is the
promised land?
Is it possible that Ivan Allen
will lash out at others with
whom he disagrees and call
them " totally unqualified" simply because they do not share
his ideals?

exalted spokesman shall attack

Is Ivan Allen the epitome of
progress in Georgia, or can the
Atlanta p e o p l e themselves
share some of the credit for
Atlanta's growth? Is it possible
that Atlanta would grow in spite
of him or does Atlanta move_because of him?
Would this great political figure be so courageous as to at- _

of Washington's evildoers? Or
shall he confine himself to defamatory remarks about a local, sincere businessman who
won a fair election on an honest

I believe that God will bold
Ivan Allen responsible for this
