Dr. William McClelland, Chairman
Allegheny County Board of Commissioners
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Dear Dr. McClelland:

When I called your office today to extend a verbal invitation for you and Mrs.
McClelland to come to Atlanta when the Braves and Pirates open on April 12, I
was sorry to learn that you were ill. I hope that this letter finds you fully re-
covered or at least well on the read to recovery. We want you to be in good
health for your trip to Atienta.

The playing of the first major league baseball game in the Southeast in our new
Atlante Stadium is an historic event. Puiten County and the City of Atlanta joined
together to underwrite the revenue certificates issued for the construction of our
new $18 million dollar, 5§,000-seat Stadium. Many important activities have
been planned to honor the Braves and the Pirates and your participation is greatly
desired, On Monday, April 11, at 8:00 p,m. a dinner for the Braves will be held
in the Grand Ballroom of the Marriott Hotel. We would like for you to be among
the head table guests. On Tuesday, April 12, at 1:30 p.m. there will be a big
parade in which we pian for you to ride. At 7:00 p.m. we would like you to partici-
pate in the pre-game ceremonies at the Stadium. We would like for you and Mrs,
MeCilelland to be our guests and accommodations have been reserved for you at the
Marriott Hotel. You may be interested to know that Governor and Mrs. Scranton
and Mayor and Mrs. Barr have been invited to participete in the festivities also.

Since Allegheny County and Pittsburgh have been a major !eaque community for
many years, I am sure you appreciate the great importence of the advent of major
league sports to Atlanta and the Southeast. We want you to join us for this impor-
tant event and we look forward to hearing from you very soon,

o

Sincerely, Au s
Archie Lindsey, Chairman
Pulton County Commission

Dear Senator:

I, too, am sorry that the President cannot be with us on April
12th and I appreciate all you did to help us.

We are certainly counting on your being here and hope that
you will be able to adrive in time for the big dinner on Monday
evening, April 12th when we honor the Braves. Naturally we
will want you to be our head table guest and say a few words.

The big parade will be at 1:30 on Tuesday in which we will want
you to ride. The pre-game ceremonies begin at 7:00 p.m. that
night and you are a big part of the program.

Please let me hear from you and let me know if 1 can make
hotel arrangements during your stay in Atlanta.

Sincerely yours,

Ivan Allen, Jr.

Dear Sir:
This letter is written to express to you my personal sympathy for your
seemingly insurmountable task as Mayor of this great city.
Recently, I received your fine letter expressing the desire that as a
part of the Opening Day celebration of Major League baseball in the
South, I invite top officials of my company to Atlanta for the weekend of April 9- 10 - 11- 12. The idea behind the invitation was great, in
that it would give industrial and commerc ial comp any representatives
the opportunity to show off Atlanta - the azaleas, the dogwood, the
redbud - all in bloom, a parade, a dinner honoring the Braves , an d the
magic o f Opening Day - what a way to entertain business l e aders who co ntrol or influence so much of the natio n 's prosperity. What a way to sell
these leaders on Atlanta, on Georgia, and the future of both - a really
major league effort and opportunity.
What a shame ..... what a pity, that the of ficialdom o f the Augusta
National and their management of the Masters are so minor league as to
black out te levi sion of their event.
My sympathies, Mr. Mayor .• ..• You will h ave a city full of guests in every
hotel, i n many liv ing rooms, and minor league Augusta National spoils
your beautiful party.
My congratulations for your determined efforts despite the rural legislation and low candle power thinking of some of your inert fellow citizens
over the state.

JOSEPH M. BARR ; ,
Maer - \. ., GITY OF PITTSBURGH

March 31, 1966

Hon. Ivan Allen, Jr.
Mayor
Atlanta, Georgia.

Dear Ivan:
In line with our ‘phone conversation of this morning, Mrs. Barr
and I will be taking United Flight fiber 473 on pe: morning, April 11th, at
eicht-thirty and will arrive in Atlanta at ten o'clock.

I understand that you have arranged for accommodations for us
at the Marriott Hotel. We are both self-sufficient, so please do not put your-
self out. I know how busy you are with the affairs of the City and the extra
curricular duties connected with the opening of the baseball season in Atlanta.

We have accepted the formal invitation for the dinner on Mon-
day evening and Alice and I are looking forward to the opportunity of visiting
with you and Mrs. Allen at that time.

Our reason for arriving so early is that my wife is not a
good flier and the only jet flight we can take, in order to get there in time
for the dinner on Monday evening, is at 8:30 in the morning.

I have made arrangements to leave there on Wednesday, April 13th
at twelve noon on United Flight Number 35
4
I think the advent of Major League Baseball to Atlanta and the
whole southeast will be a great boon to our national pastime. I only hope that
you are as strong a baseball fan as I am, as the ownership and management of the
Pirates are pe#sonal friends of mine.

As you are perhaps aware, we are in the midst of building a new
stadium in Pittsburgh for the Pirates and the Pittsburgh Steelers Football team.

With kind regards to you and Mrs. Allen, and looking forward to
seeing both of you on the 11th, I am

Sincerely yours, oy
