Dear Mister Mayor:

I had hoped to be among the first to express appreciation to you for
your leadership in our time of stress, The Vice President and many
others have been ahead of me, but I still want you to know how I feel.

Your courage and your decisiveness epitomize the best qualities we seek
in civic leadership. Typical of your entire public career is the manner
in which you faced our problems head-on this week. I recall your
similar quick action when our community witnessed a tragic accident in
Paris. You have a remarkable talent for moving into the center of
problems rather than waiting for them to go away. I like this quality in
you.

Our town is fortunate to have you as its spokesman and leader. You
deserve the fullest backing possible and the gratitude of every good
citizen of our community. You have both my thanks and my support.

It's a personal comfort to know you're "'in charge. ''

God bless you.

David Goldwasser

Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr.
City Hall

68 Mitchell Street, S. W.
Atlanta, Georgia

Dear Mayor Allen:

As a native Atlantan for over fifty years, I wish to express
my commendation for the stand which you have taken in the
recent unrest caused by a portion of our Negro populace.

Many people seem to overlook the fact that the Negro race,
particularly as we know it in the South, is endowed with

certain inherent characteristics which give vent to a status
paralleling a parent-child association. Strona and influ-

ential guidance is necessary but an occasional scolding or spank-
ing has proven to be a necessary incredient to proper "up-
bringing". Certainly, lawlessness, violence and disregard for
the rights and property of others has no place in our society.

It hasn't been too long ago when people were apprehended and
punished for merely disturbing the peace,

Today strong leadership is called for, and many of us believe
that the leader who gets there "firstest with the mostest" will
prevail.

Sincerely yours
