Dear Mayor Allen:
Si tting comfortably in a chair after breakfast, I read.
about the trouble yesterday--the two first page stories in
the C01iSTITUTI ON and Mr. Patterson's superb editorial built
mostly around your words and deeds.
As a moderately active liberal, I am saddened by the incident;
it should not have happened. Yet it was a s mall affair wh en
compared with Watts and similar outbreaks in northern and
western cities. Atlanta's. image as a soutre r n c ity which
manages to handle its pr oblems i s not seriously dama ged9
You had some help from the police and from sensible ne gro
leaders. But it was your coolness, courag e, and resourcefulness which saved the day.
Yesterday you won a Cong ressional
Medal or its equivalent, and you also achieved t he p ersonal
stature in the minds of whites and colored which will enable
you deal ef f ectively with the issues which remain.

Mayor Ivan Allen
City Hall
Atlanta, Georgia

Dear Mayor Allen:

Sitting comfortably in a chair after breakfast, I read.
about the trouble yesterday--the two first page stories in
the CONSTITUTION and Mr. Patterson's superb editorial built
mostly around your words and deeds.

As a moderately active liberal, I am saddened by the incident;
it should not have happened. Yet it was a small affair when
compared with Watts and similar outbreaks in northern and
western cities. Atlanta's image as a southern city which
manages to handle its problems is not seriously damaged.

You had some help from the police and from sensible negro
leaders. But it was your coolness, courage, and resourceful-
ness which saved the day. Yesterday you won a Congressional
Medal or its equivalent, and you also achieved the personal
stature in the minds of whites and colored which will enable
you deal effectively with the issues which remain.

Cheers and cheers for the Mayor!

Respectfully yours,

D ear Ivan:
You have the admiration and support of all law-abiding
citizens of Atlanta by your courageous and heroic confrontation of the lawless mob of agitators on Tuesday.
It is clear to all that having the top elected official of
the city in the forefront did much to quell the mob, and
minimize the destructive aspects of this well-planned
insurrection.
It is as painful to all citizens of Atlanta as it is to you
to see our wonderful record in the area of race relations
marred by outside agitators. Please be as sured that you
have the support and admiration of all of your friends and
true citizens of our great city.

Dear Ivan:

I want to express to you my personal appreciation of the fine job
which you have done in coping with problems arising out of the firemen's
strike and the racial disorders earlier this week. At all times, you have
been dignified and fair in your approach, but when necessary, youhave shown

In dealing with large groups or masses of people in an emotionally-
charged atmosphere, good leadership demands not only a willingness to be
conciliatory and understanding of the other fellow's problems, but also
letting everyone know that unreasonable and disorderly actions will not be
tolerated, You have certainly displayed these qualities to an admirable
degree under very trying circumstances.

I think one of the tragic mistakes made by the city administrations
and police officials in other cities where these riots have gotten out of hand
has been to temporize and tolerate too much from the radical extremist
leaders. This enables the radical leader to grow in strength in the eyes of
the mob, and he becomes doubly difficult to deal with later on, Also, in
these other cities, they allowed themselves to be persuaded to withdraw
police enforcement and protection at the outset of the trouble, thus leaving
the arena completely dominated by the radical leaders and with no law and
order there to give aid and comfort to the decent Negro citizens. Fortunately
for us, you and Chief Jenkins did not make these tactical mistakes, for had
you done so, the radical leaders would have had a clear field in which to gain
momentum for their disorders, and it would have been a thousandfold more
difficult for the police to go back in and quell the disorders at a later date.

Although things have quieted down and seem to be in good shape today
on the racial front, we will all be hoping and praying that no further trouble
arises, I feel a lot better about the situation knowing that you and Chief
Jenkins are following a wise course in displaying the qualities of good leader-

Dear Ivan:
For some months I have wanted to write an expression of my
appreciation of your many accomplishments as Mayor and your
outstanding contributions to all the wide spectrum of activities in our great city.
I have deferred writing simply
because I was unable to adequately express myself without
becoming verbose.
After yesterday's exhibitien of raw courage, I can only say
that I am proud of Mayor Ivan Allen and also of the true
citizens of Atlanta who have so carefully conducted themselves under extremely trying circumstances.
When the history of Atlanta is written, I suspect your administration will be recorded a~ one beset by more and greater
problems and by more and greater accomplishments than any
other. The problems are not resolved by any means, but under
your guidance, there is hope of ultimate solutions which will
benefit all citizens in our Atlanta area.

Sincerely yours,

Dear Ivan:

There are many reasons why I value your friendship so
highly. Foremost among these, of course, is the fact that your
father was one of my staunchest supporters during the many years
I was with the Atlanta Retail Merchants Association. He was a
great encouragement to me and stood behind me in everything I did.

I shall remember always that you cancelled an out-of-town
engagement to be the speaker at the testimonial given Reba and me
by the Association shortly before my retirement. That alone would
endear you to me forever.

Then you had the vision and courage to give Atlanta Big
League Baseball and Football. Baseball is my favorite sport, and
it is wonderful to have the opportunity to see right here in Atlanta
all of the best baseball players in the world. And when Atlanta
gets into a World Series, as I believe she will within the next few
years, I just hope I shall be fortunate enough to see some of those
games.

Just recently you have conducted yourself magnificently
in connection with the Firemen's Strike; and what now appears to
have been a Castro-inspired riot, through some hot-headed revolution-
aries in our midst.

Well, there are many other reasons, and I just felt, in
a time of great stress, that you should be told your friends are
standing solidly behind you in your efforts to make our beloved
Atlanta a beacon-light city for all to see.

Cordially & Sincerely

To the Editor:
UPGRADED or DEGRADED?

It 4s hereby suggested that citisens of Atlanta proclaim a MAYOR IVAN ALLSN
APPRECIATION DAY in honor of the illustrious (and commensense) mayor, He was
directly responsible for quelling possible riots instigated by angry individuals
giving vent to their feelings after unfortunate shooting incidents on North
Boulevard Street ani other areas, |

A weiter has viewed his opinion that the scene of the mayor being jostled from
an automobile top to the grouml only to land on his knees before the rioting

crowl was ‘degrading.’ Frankly, my first thought was that the mayor was most
agile in picking himself up before anyone could start a count—iowm to ten.

As can be expected of any brave ani honorable General he was there ready to go
into battle with his men on the battlefield, if need be. However, the peppery
mayor was on the seene placating in the capacity of peacemaker.

The aforementioned writer who 'fired* me up to write this letter has added that
it was a ‘sickening experience* to see the mayor jeered and chanted dow on Boulevard.

Just a reminder that another peacemaker at another time carried his cross to
Calvary amidst jeers and cheers ani has been revered for two thousani years for
his complete dedication to his God«given purpose of bringing light ani truth ani
peace into the world.
