May 6, 1968
Atlanta's Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr., today made the following
statement with regard to the anticipated arrival here on Thursday
of the participants in the Poor People's March.
"J have asked Mr. Albert Bows, President of the Atlanta
Chamber of Commerce; Dr. Harmon Moore, Executive Director
of the Christian Council of Metropolitan Atlanta; and Chief
Herbert T. jediiee, to serve as a City Coordinating Committee,
to confer at once with officials of the Southern Christian Leader-
ship Conference and local representatives of the Metropolitan
Atlanta Summit Leadership Congress.
"This coordinating committee will secure information
regarding arrival and departure times, march routes and such
requirements as meeting places, housing and food, and then
make recommendations for such assistance as might be needed
from the community.
"The city government will make every effort to provide
adequate city services, and J urge organizations and citizens to
cooperate in this effort,"

I want to teke this opportunity to thank you,
Mr. Fletcher and Mr. Sweat for your cooperation
during our trying times last Friday in making the
Civic Center available for the public meeting following Dr.
Martin Luther King's death.
I em sure that the exercising of an uncommon amount
of meture intelligence by you, certainly helped us avoid
a dangerous situation that could have easily ended in
tradgedy.
This type of sincere cooperation, if it were avail~
able from other city department heads, could readily lead
to a revolutinpn in race relations in the City of Atlanta,
