Interview with Billy McKinney, conducted during the writing of Georgia Tech History, Technology, and Society Professor Ronald H. Bayor's 1996 book Race and the Shaping of Twentieth-Century Atlanta. In this interview, McKinney discusses the racial discrimination that he experienced while working for the Atlanta Police Department. McKinney integrated the Atlanta Police Department by becoming Atlanta's earliest African American police officer. McKinney spearheaded the efforts of the Afro-American Police League by demanding the hiring of more African Americans and better treatment for African American civilians. He also served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1983 to 2002.
