Description
Interview with Horace Tate, conducted during the writing of Georgia Tech History, Technology, and Society Professor Ronald H. Bayor's 1996 book Race and the Shaping of Twentieth-Century Atlanta. This interview discusses the desegregation of Atlanta schools in the 1960s. Tate was well known as an educator, teaching for 39 years and even holding positions at the Georgia Teachers and Education Association. Also, he was the first African American to run for the office of Mayor of Atlanta in 1969. During that same year, Tate served as the Director of the National Education Association. In 1974, he was elected to the Georgia State Senate.
