SUBJECT: Theatre of the Stars Building in Chastain Park.
Dear Mr. Delius:
As you are aware both the "Theatre Under The Sters" and the
"Municipal Theatre! no longer exist. Jn place of these.two theatres
is the newly chartered and duly organized "Theatre of the Stars, Inc.",
which will be the future sunmer and winter.theatre. The 1969 suxmer .
shows will be held in the new Civic Auditorium, and the opening show
will be on July &, 1969.
The new "Theatre of the Stars" is presently operating out of the
old Municipal Theatre building in Chastain Park. This building was
erected on Chastain Park property, under a lease agreement of three (3)
years with the City of Atlanta, which expired on September 15, 1967.
Under the lease agreement, it is renewable "upon such terms and
conditions as thé Mayor may desire",
‘ In order to constuct this building, a note for $32,500.00 was
negotiated by the Municipal Theatre with the Citizens and Southern
Yational Bank. Presently there is an unpaid balance of $17,500,00-~
no payments, due to the defunct condition of the Municipal Theatre,
have been made since December, 1958. I am presently discussing this
indebtedness with the 0. & 5S. Bank and will also discuss it with
the Board of Trustees of the Theatre of the Stars at their May meeting.
Unless we can maintain the usage of this building it will be
impossible to present the 1969 summer shows. Will you therefore
discuss this with the proper city authorities and secure a lease
extension? Thank you for your assistance.
