Dear Ivan:
Having now been a citizen of Atlanta for almost twenty years,
I felt sure that the national groups which are interested in accomplishing
their own aims with no respect for law and order could not effectuate
a riot in this city. I have been greatly disappointed that you had to
face the disturbances caused by just a few radicals which tends to over-
throw all the fine work that has been done in the negro community.
Your handling of the problem Tuesday could not have been better.
We all realize that you accomplished by your own actions the only possible
physical control of the rioters to prevent another "Watts", Your action
will stand in my memory as an act far beyond the call of duty but, I am
sure no one can describe what your duty or mine is in such a case,
We all appreciate your fine handling of the situation.
