Honorable Mayer Ivan.Allen, Jro
Mayor of the City of Atlanta
68 Mitchell St., S.W.

Atlanta, Georgia 3031}

My Dear Mayor Allen:

This letter is not only to laud you for the great efforts you have shown

in making Atlanta a place of harmony” "and providing a democratic government
for all its people but to praise you for the great, courage exemplified in
the recent racial incident. You steod as a" Gulliver in the midst of the
Lilliputians " or as an invulnerable man in the midst ‘of enemies. You won
your battle with courage as did David against eo

Any rational person should be aware that the racial question is not one that
will be solved over night in the minds and hearts of’ Negroes er whites.
Neither will it be solved by violence. Consequently, Stokely Carmichael and
S.N.C.C. should be ashame of inciting riots that causes ocent black and
white men to be injured and killed while they cowardly slip away completely
unharmed. The Civil rights movement by no means should cease, but the tac-
tics of S.N.C.C. are only impeding the progress ‘of the Negro at a time when
he is benefitted more tie at any other time in ‘the hisfory of his existence
in America.

Complimenting you again, we te you to-know that) the actions of S.N.C.C.
are not the consensus of the great “majority,of Negroes. There are many
of us who still desire to become conscious contributors and lay aside the
status of beneficiary and ward for that offa collaborator and participant
in the American Civilization. We appreciate you greatly.

Sincerely,

Fred Ellis
Student of Morehouse College
