Mr. Ivan Allen
Mayor, Atlanta, Georgia
City Hall
Atlanta, Georgia
Dear Mayor Allen:
I have never in my life agreed with anything
that Martin Luther King said, but he was cer-
tainly eminently correct night before last when he stated that
"Georgia is a sick state". He was aboslutely correct about
this, because:
1) He is sick of the Mayor of Atlanta and in spite of
all he has done for the Negros, and says so publicly.
2) He is sick of Atlanta newspapers, for though they
have prostrated themselves for the Negros in Atlanta,
he wants them to do more.
3) He is sick of Governor Arnall, because he tried to
stand in the middle of the road and it is a well
known fact that in South Georgia they voted against
Arnall.
4) They are sick of the poverty program because it
hasn't given them a lot, house, furniture and farm,
to each and every Negro family in Georgia.
5) They are sick of Lyndon Johnson and the whole shebang
because they have given them only a little more than
three billion dollars to sit around Harlam and the
West and loaf.
There was a great deal of sympathy during your most recent riot
but unless I am badly mistaken you took an oath to support the
Democratic Nominee, as you are an office holder under the Demo-
cratic Party. We are not surprised at the Congressman, because
he is absolutely beholden to the Negros of Fulton County-for
electing him.
I knew you and your father many years ago, having lived in
Atlanta, and I always regarded him as a very high type honor-
able gentleman. If you go back on your oath to support the
Democratic Nominee I would bet my right arm that Lester Maddox
Page Two,
will beat "Bo" Calloway by the largest majority of any campaign
in Georgia.
Though these matters are simple,.I thought I would call them to
your attention that you may give careful consideration to them,
and Georgia will be waiting for your announcement as to whom you
are going to support.
Wishing you success, I am
