Dear Mayor Allen:
Since I started voting in 1944, I have voted
about as many times for Democrats as I have for
Republicans. So, I don't think that anybody
could say I am prejudiced either way.
Your statement regarding Lester Maddox was a
wonderful statement. It is really a great thing
to have the leader of the city in which you live
to stand up and say what he thinks instead of, as
so many of our political people have to do, making weak, vacillating statements .

regarding the runoff in the Governor's race of September 28, 1966. You
are the only man in public office in Georgia who has shown any character,
integrity or courage, according to my way of thinking.
The things that have happened in Georgia since Wednesday, September 28,
are nauseating to me. I have truly swapped the devil for the witch-am originally from Alabama.
Mr. Allen, I pray that you will stand firm in your convictions.

How refreshing it was to read your statement on the
results of the elec tion September 28th .! Every word of it was
true and I think you analyzed the situat i on exactly. Yo u are
t o be commended for having the courage to say it. The pity is
that others in high official position in our State and National
government a re silent in the presence of a possible catast rophe
facing Georgia.
As a Georgian I feel a s hamed before the world because
of what happened . As a lawyer, I shudder with overwhe lming
dismay at the thought that the nominee of the Democratic party
might have an opportunity to appointment more than one-half of
the members of the Georgia Supreme Court. Four of the seven
members of the Court are more than 72 years of age ; one is 75 .
Even the three youngest members are 6 2, 60 and 57 years of age
r esp e ctively.
·
Every Georgian will need to search h is own conscience
between now and the General Election. As for me, if I must
embrace Maddox t o save the Democratic party, it is not worth
saving in Georgia.

of the top columnists in the nation - a total of nine at present.
True, it doesn't have all of
them. It doesn't have Joseph
Kraft or Doris Fleeson. But it
has enough of them that the

I have always supported you, but along with many others,
I don't think I realized what kind of man you we re until our
recent "riots". I believe that you really care about Atlanta
in a very personal way.
The main reason for my writing this though is because
of your stand on our "political race" held last week. Many
lea de rs must have shared your v iew that it was "deplorable",
yet how many said so? Only you and Congressman Weltner,
who has given up a lot for his conviction.

I was born and r ais ed in Atlant a , and I have lived
in Wes t Palm Beach f or appr oximately t en year s .
However , I am a member of the Young Democra tes of
Florida and I am naturally interested in ihat is going

I was shocked to learn of t h e outcome of the
Democratic primary, but your statement, which I heard
on television that night ~as s ome consolation. I have
to admire you for stating what .you believe is right,
which is more t han can be said for Mr . Maddox. I am
very concerned about t h e up-coming election. I believe
that if Lester Maddox is elected governor of Georgia ,
it will be t he greatest set-back Georgia as had.
I am an "A" student in civics and .American
government, and a member of the Senior class of
Forest Hill Hi gh School in West Palm Beach . Being

This is the first time in my life I have ever been moved to write to
a public official; however, at a time when I am most ashamed of my
state, I wo uld like to congratulate you on your stand regarding the
disgusting outcome of the Democratic primary.
You have, in my opinion, done an excellent job as Mayor of Atlanta.
In the future, if you should run for any public office - whether it
be for mayor or governo r - I will not only vote for you, but will be
happy to work toward your election.
Jus t one thing - couldn't you please just this once vote for a
Republican and forget the fishing tripl I, too, am a Democrat but

There was always something about
Sherwood Anderson that intrigued
me. His style was dark and mysterious; his words
came out of the
twili ght, neither of
night. or of d a y.

Na tura lly, or perhaps I should say
logically, h e had a s upreme contempt
for the yokels .. . their thought pr ocesses, their solemn opinions, their inane prej udices. And so h e bought a
paper .. . the Smith County News,
and then - of all things! - the rival
paper, the Marion Democrat. Both
weeklies, mind you. One Democratic
and one Republican . .. Well, this
was back in the depression when only
Sherwood Ande rson h ad money,
money for w h at he said he h eard in
the whispering corn under the dark
of the moon . . . and so he la u ghed,
owning these two papers. A ma n
named Hoover was running for presi-
d ent then aga inst a man n a m e d
Roosevelt . . . and I don't think he
liked e ithe r ML H oove r or Mr. Rooseve lt . . . Anyway, he h ad a unique
way of expressing it. A perfect w ay.
In one paper, the Republican paper (The Smith County News) he denounced l\1'r. Roosevelt and lauded
Mr. Hoover. And Sh erwood Anderson
could do a magic job of that.
In the other paper, he denounced
Mr. Hoover and lauded Mr. Roosevelt,
and J.\'lr. Anderson was a master at
that.
Hut it was not only on politics th at
Sherwood Ande rson differ ed with
himself .. . some times it was a matter of the Smith County News de.1ouncing the Marion Democrat, and
vice-versa ; and She rwood Anderm n
wrote both editorials! .. . and be th of
them equally eloquent.
What a wonderful way to live out
one's life!
They say here in Marion that S herwood Anderson is dead, but I am not
so sul"e .. . one night I walked out to
the high hill where they buried him
and I sweal" I heard him talking in a
low voice as the moon came over the
nountain.
There was nobody around ... th ere
·. t,as never anybody around when
Sherwood spoke .. . but the low voice
,__mtinued, half jestingly, half eame~tly . .. and then I knew there was
.....thing serious but the dark ground

of Georgia. However, I was astounded to hear you attack him with ridicule
in a press conference last night .
Mr. Maddox thrives on ridicule. He has gained a great deal of support
from misguided sympathy and continued sarcastic attacks on him will serve
only to increase his support.
Please let us defeat Mr. Maddox on other grounds . We do not believe he is
capable or qualified and should have no hesitation in saying so but let us
not make a martyr of him since such action will only insure his victory in
the general election.

You demonstrated that you were a man of level-headed courage by
your actions during the recent racial riots in At l antao Your public
reaction t o Lester Maddox 's primary runoff victory showed you to be
a man of strong convictions , to have the courage to express t hose
convictions and the guts to "call a spade a spade. 11
It appears that f or the next f our years the cards have been
"stacked" against Georgia by what you so aptly described as "the
duplicity of Republican voters," and that the choice facing us in t he
November 8 ele ction is mere l y that of selecting the lesser of two
evils. This being the case , I don't think any of us can afford to
"go fishing" November 8 as that may just as assuredly land us in the
worst possible situation as would a vote f or Maddox . I know that for
many of us it is a choice that sticks in the craw, but it is one that
we have to face, nowo ( Besides, it is a secret ballot.)
I admire your stamina and willingness to stand up for what you
consider to be ri ght . Keep it up, but just a word of caution: Don't
do anything rash. I believe I ' d like to see you in the next gubernatorial race.

What happened to the Empire State, it seems that this
Carmichael and the eruption here in Atlanta and throughput the country on this Black Power has frightened many
good citizens. But at the same time, I glory in your
presentation to the public, even though those who
voted for Lester Maddox didn't approve.
I am jus t wondering if there i s anything that can be
done that will change this s i t uation. Of course, it

gubernat orial candidate are a disappointment for me and sure ly
a cause for concern for all citizens in thi s community and
state. Fortunately, however , the Democratic primary is no
longer necessarily the equivalent of the election and we still
have a choi ce and chance to keep our state headed in the right
direction. The ch oice between Lester Maddox and Howard
Calloway is one which we cannot afford not making.

situation and to take steps in the direction of preserving
us from Mr. Maddox for the next four years. It would appear
that committees of responsible citizens in Georgia could be

This letter is to express my appreciation and pride
for what you tried to do in the name of justice and fairplay during the recent racial disturbance in your city. In
one sens e it would seem that you did no more than what a
man in your position would be expected to do, but when it
is taken into concideration that you are a prominant Southern
Gentleman in charge of a large city in the South •••. what
you did is just this side of great.
Not many people would have acted as you did if they
were in your place. What ever your personal views on the
Negro
and his problems matters little. What does matter is
the fact that you saw fit to uphold the duties of yuur
office in the highest tradition. It would be all too easy
in this day and age for you to turn your back on the situation, things being what they are you would have had many
supporters if you had chosen to take a stand of silence.
I realize that a letter of this nature means little or
nothing to a man of your standing. You have more important
things to do than read trivia. But, still and all perhaps
if you receive more such letters from half way across the
continent, you will stand taller and fight harder knowing
that there are a few of us around who back you up.
