The Honorable Ivan Allen, Jr.
Mayor, City of Atlanta
City Hall
Atlanta, Georgia
Dear Mayor Allen:
Since I started voting in 1944, I have voted
about as many times for Democrats as I have for
Republicans. So, I don't think that anybody
could say I am prejudiced either way.
Your statement regarding Lester Maddox was a
wonderful statement. It is really a great thing
to have the leader of the city in which you live
to stand up and say what he thinks instead of, as
so many of our political people have to do, making weak, vacillating statements .

Dear Mayor Allen:
This is to tell you how much I admire you for the stand you have taken
regarding the runoff in the Governor's race of September 28, 1966. You
are the only man in public office in Georgia who has shown any character,
integrity or courage, according to my way of thinking.
The things that have happened in Georgia since Wednesday, September 28,
are nauseating to me. I have truly swapped the devil for the witch-am originally from Alabama.
Mr. Allen, I pray that you will stand firm in your convictions.

Dear Mayor All en:
How refreshing it was to read your statement on the
results of the elec tion September 28th .! Every word of it was
true and I think you analyzed the situat i on exactly. Yo u are
t o be commended for having the courage to say it. The pity is
that others in high official position in our State and National
government a re silent in the presence of a possible catast rophe
facing Georgia.
As a Georgian I feel a s hamed before the world because
of what happened . As a lawyer, I shudder with overwhe lming
dismay at the thought that the nominee of the Democratic party
might have an opportunity to appointment more than one-half of
the members of the Georgia Supreme Court. Four of the seven
members of the Court are more than 72 years of age ; one is 75 .
Even the three youngest members are 6 2, 60 and 57 years of age
r esp e ctively.
·
Every Georgian will need to search h is own conscience
between now and the General Election. As for me, if I must
embrace Maddox t o save the Democratic party, it is not worth
saving in Georgia.
I hop e I shall have the pl ea s ure of meeting y ou
sometime .

New York's new newspaper-The World Journal Trib eis a lively, interesting, extremely informative sheet.

a great newspaper-the following are obvious:
(1) Advertising is_ kept in its
proper place. T~e ~st page of
the second section. 1s clear of
advertising. ~he . first page of
the third sectiOf! 1s clear of advertising. The first page of the
fourth section is clear of advertising. Yet the paper as a whole
isJull of advertising.
(2) There is· ample coverage
of national and international
news.
(3 ) The page opposite the editorial page is also kept free of
advertising. Here, and on the
editorial page itself, are some
of the top columnists in the nation - a total of nine at present.
True, it doesn't have all of
them. It doesn't have Joseph
Kraft or Doris Fleeson. But it
has enough of them that the
J ustice department is crying
"Monopoly! " The present antitrust suit against the World
Journal Tribune is based on
j w,t this contention. Dorothy

rival-claims she tried her best
to get some of them but
couldn't. However this may be,
the W-J-T has two solid pages

Di\ILY BOOK REVIEW

(5) The new J¥1per has significant coverage of art, music,
the dance , ti

course - radio and TV. No major cultural activity is overlooked. .The coverage is more
complete than any of its three
predecessors.
2 TOPS IN SPORTS
(6) ThE;! sports section, yith
two top columnists, Red Srl1ith

Key statistics, like bas hall

clear type, nor are " Yesterday's

seemingly little matter, but a
bench mark of a great newspaper.
(7) Most financial and business pages are factual but dull.
There is drama, however, in
business and finance. W-J-T
catches some of it i lively fashion. And its stock market prices
are complete and readable.

Dear Mayor Allen~
My hat is off to you and your stand against the Democratic

Dear Mayor Allen,
I am writing simply to say that I am proud to have
you as Mayor of our city.
I have always supported you, but along with many others,
I don't think I realized what kind of man you we re until our
recent "riots". I believe that you really care about Atlanta
in a very personal way.
The main reason for my writing this though is because
of your stand on our "political race" held last week. Many
lea de rs must have shared your v iew that it was "deplorable",
yet how many said so? Only you and Congressman Weltner,
who has given up a lot for his conviction.
Again, thank you for being a "strong" leader and for
caring about our great city .

However , I am a member of the Young Democra tes of

I was shocked to learn of t h e outcome of the

which is more t han can be said for Mr . Maddox. I am

that if Lester Maddox is elected governor of Georgia ,
it will be t he greatest set-back Georgia as had.

Dea r Mayor Allen:
As a graduate student at Duke University, I

been much int e r e sted in t h e political c ampai gn ,
and now I deplore the results of the Democratic

heard your comment s on the Democra tic nominee.
I am writing to commend you f or your forthright stand. It was good to hear a Democ ratic leader
call Lester addox wholly unqualifie d f or the off ice
he seeks. Hi s appeal to bigotry and irre sponsibility
have been contemptibl e, and the dam.age to Georgia's
reputation will , I fear, be great . Those of us who
have hoped that Georgia would continue to have
sensible leadership under the Democrats have been
greatly disappointed .
Your statement to the press expresses my
views well. The Democratic party has chosen an
unsupportable leader.

CHARLES A. BEARD says:
"This is a new chapter in American

C_L AUDE G. BOWERS says:
"I found D em ocracy in the Making so
fascinating chat I read it from beginning
co end without stopping. It is a robust
and dramatic, rapidly moving scary of
epochal battles for the preservation of
democracy against the attacks of. an embryo plutocracy, wri tten wi th g usto and
color. Ic covers a new field in carrying
forward the story from Jackson to John
Tyler to whom tardy justice is done.
From these pages emerges the real fighting Tyler, able, consistent, incorruptible,
courageous, impervious to the wiles of
demagogues and the temptings of ambition- one of the fine, fighting Presidents.
In scraping off the barnacles of prejudice
and hate and revealing the real figure of
Tyler, the author ·has rendered a real
service to history."
MARQUIS JAMES says:
"A good piece of work adding considerably to our published knowledge of
the Jackson Period."
WILLIAM E. DODD says:
"This is an interesting picture of things
for the Jackson-Van Buren-Tyler years,
especially good in giving personal attitudes as well as efforts to defeat democracy. It will serve a useful purpose, now
that democracies are really in danger."
WILLIAM E. WOODWARD says:
"Here is a book of vital interest and
enduring significance, one which will
eventually cause a revision of an important section of American history,"
MARION, VA. Sherwood Anderson made this town famous. Ile lived
here. Here he wrote "Dark La ughter"
and many another novel.
There was always something about
Sherwood Anderson that intrigued
me. His style was dark and mysterious; his words
came out of the
twili ght, neither of
night. or of d a y.
Sometimes, w h e n
all w a s still and
the moon was
down, you could
hear him laughing ...
His books were
not n o v e I s, not
plots ... they were llttl(h Russe ll Fraser
more than that; actually, they were
conversations - low pitched, and
mysterious - conversations at midni ght.
He spoke of beauty, sparsely,
eharingly ... for it was all he knew.
He did not bother with fear. Why
should he? He had discovered something more important ... the silence
and magic of the woods at night, and
huma n voices . . . talkin g bluntly ,
hesitantly, of the m yste1·y of life and
love.
And so I came t o Marion. And w h a t
I found - well, it was so uproariously fu nny, I could not h elp but
laugh.
Na tura lly, or perhaps I should say
logically, h e had a s upreme contempt
for the yokels .. . their thought pr ocesses, their solemn opinions, their inane prej udices. And so h e bought a
paper .. . the Smith County News,
and then - of all things! - the rival
paper, the Marion Democrat. Both
weeklies, mind you. One Democratic
and one Republican . .. Well, this
was back in the depression when only
Sherwood Ande rson h ad money,
money for w h at he said he h eard in
the whispering corn under the dark
of the moon . . . and so he la u ghed,
owning these two papers. A ma n
named Hoover was running for presi-
d ent then aga inst a man n a m e d
Roosevelt . . . and I don't think he
liked e ithe r ML H oove r or Mr. Rooseve lt . . . Anyway, he h ad a unique
way of expressing it. A perfect w ay.
In one paper, the Republican paper (The Smith County News) he denounced l\1'r. Roosevelt and lauded
Mr. Hoover. And Sh erwood Anderson
could do a magic job of that.
In the other paper, he denounced
Mr. Hoover and lauded Mr. Roosevelt,
and J.\'lr. Anderson was a master at
that.
Hut it was not only on politics th at
Sherwood Ande rson differ ed with
himself .. . some times it was a matter of the Smith County News de.1ouncing the Marion Democrat, and
vice-versa ; and She rwood Anderm n
wrote both editorials! .. . and be th of
them equally eloquent.
What a wonderful way to live out
one's life!
They say here in Marion that S herwood Anderson is dead, but I am not
so sul"e .. . one night I walked out to
the high hill where they buried him
and I sweal" I heard him talking in a
low voice as the moon came over the
nountain.
There was nobody around ... th ere
·. t,as never anybody around when
Sherwood spoke .. . but the low voice
,__mtinued, half jestingly, half eame~tly . .. and then I knew there was
.....thing serious but the dark ground
.t )d the slowly-rising moon . . . and,
a.s if to lighten it all, the sound of
d"-Y'k laughter.

I agree with you that Lester M3.ddox is not qualified to serve as Governor

in a press conference last night .
Mr. Maddox thrives on ridicule. He has gained a great deal of support
from misguided sympathy and continued sarcastic attacks on him will serve
only to increase his support.
Please let us defeat Mr. Maddox on other grounds . We do not believe he is

Dear May or Allen:
You demonstrated that you were a man of level-headed courage by
your actions during the recent racial riots in At l antao Your public
reaction t o Lester Maddox 's primary runoff victory showed you to be
a man of strong convictions , to have the courage to express t hose
convictions and the guts to "call a spade a spade. 11
It appears that f or the next f our years the cards have been
"stacked" against Georgia by what you so aptly described as "the
duplicity of Republican voters," and that the choice facing us in t he
November 8 ele ction is mere l y that of selecting the lesser of two
evils. This being the case , I don't think any of us can afford to
"go fishing" November 8 as that may just as assuredly land us in the
worst possible situation as would a vote f or Maddox . I know that for
many of us it is a choice that sticks in the craw, but it is one that
we have to face, nowo ( Besides, it is a secret ballot.)
I admire your stamina and willingness to stand up for what you
consider to be ri ght . Keep it up, but just a word of caution: Don't
do anything rash. I believe I ' d like to see you in the next gubernatorial race.
Sincerely,
-

Carmichael and the eruption here in Atlanta and throughput the country on this Black Power has frightened many
good citizens. But at the same time, I glory in your
presentation to the public, even though those who
voted for Lester Maddox didn't approve.
I am jus t wondering if there i s anything that can be
done that will change this s i t uation. Of course, it
was mor e tha n unfo r tuna te , e spec i ally afte r the wor k
which ha s been done by you and others, bu t I am sur e that
by hold ing s teadfa s t we wil l stil l come ou t on t op.
One thing was certain, it was a re l ief t o see tha t the
Lieutenant was defeated in a big way. This at leas t
gives us some satisfactinn .
Again congratulations on your position. It seems that
whenever you do have to make a stateme nt you "hit the

Dear Mayor Allen:
May I take this opportunity to thank you for your
excellent statement on the election of Lester Maddox.
It was exactly what I felt but was unable to express
in such appropiate language.
I thank God for your leadership every nightand I hope
that your health will hold b ut so that you may continue
to lead Atlanta in a direction that makes me proud to

I am now sorry to have to say that I am from the State of

My husband joins me in expressing our thanks and admiration

Dear Mayor Allen:
MY HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR STAND, WITH REGARD TO
MR. LESTER MADDOX • • ••• YOU, MR. ALLEN, ARE PRICELESS~
The world must be told that true Georgians are not the
rebels of our nation. My great-grandfather surrendered
at Appomattox, with General Lee. Your stand wa s as much
a mark of true leadership as was this surrender. There
are many intelligent, logical thinking people in this
state who feel exactly as you do.
Mr . Maddox is in no way qualified to be Governor of the
State of Georgia, but he is well-qualified to embarrass
our state before the world.
You may feel that you must go fishing on election day,
but I must GO-BO!

Dear Sir:
The results of the run-off yesterday for the Democratic
gubernat orial candidate are a disappointment for me and sure ly
a cause for concern for all citizens in thi s community and
state. Fortunately, however , the Democratic primary is no
longer necessarily the equivalent of the election and we still
have a choi ce and chance to keep our state headed in the right
direction. The ch oice between Lester Maddox and Howard
Calloway is one which we cannot afford not making.
You, Sir, are highly respected in this connnunity and ,
f or that reason, I call upon you to take stock of our
situation and to take steps in the direction of preserving
us from Mr. Maddox for the next four years. It would appear
that committees of responsible citizens in Georgia could be
organized by you and others to raise funds for Mr. Gal loway's
campaign and to get out the vote in November. If I may be of
assi stance, feel free to · call on meo

Dear Mr . Allen:
Congratulations on your courageous comment on the nomination of Lester Maddox
for governor. I painfully awaited the national news on this ev3nt, but your cogent
remarks were sort of an antidote.
I am even more alarmed than I was three days ago, for now all those silent
Democrats seemed to awaken and are climbing on the bandwagon . As bitter as the choice
is, I feel th t we must vote for the more moderate of the candidates, Bo Calloway.
My artlcle from the Goffe ~ County Progress shows my concern.

Dear Mayor,
This letter is to express my appreciation and pride
for what you tried to do in the name of justice and fairplay during the recent racial disturbance in your city. In
one sens e it would seem that you did no more than what a
man in your position would be expected to do, but when it
is taken into concideration that you are a prominant Southern
Gentleman in charge of a large city in the South •••. what
you did is just this side of great.
Not many people would have acted as you did if they
were in your place. What ever your personal views on the
Negro
and his problems matters little. What does matter is
the fact that you saw fit to uphold the duties of yuur
office in the highest tradition. It would be all too easy
in this day and age for you to turn your back on the situation, things being what they are you would have had many
supporters if you had chosen to take a stand of silence.
I realize that a letter of this nature means little or
nothing to a man of your standing. You have more important
things to do than read trivia. But, still and all perhaps
if you receive more such letters from half way across the
continent, you will stand taller and fight harder knowing
that there are a few of us around who back you up.
Keep up the good work,

Dear Mayor Allen :
It is not my cus tom to write letters to persons in poli tical office.
I thought about communicating with you at the time Atl anta 's firemen walked

displayed on those occasions were exemplary and should be commended. Now
you have vividly expressed my shocked outrage at the results of the Democratic runoff, and I feel compe.lled to l et you know that there are many of
us who endorse your statement.
I want to go further, too, and express appreciation for the quality
of leadership you are providing. To date you are the only Georgian in high
political office who has dared to make a public declaration deploring the
outcome of the primary, and warning the people of its possible devastating
effects on our state. Many of us are deeply grateful that you have sufficient courage to be a spokesman for us.
