Dear Mr. Mayor:

As graduate students at the University of Georgia and "adopted"
Georgians we feel compelled to write this note of appreciation
and support. Your stand during the recent civil rights distur-
bances in Atlanta and your courageous, non-theatrical exposure

of your person at the scene of the disturbances are, in our
opinion, without precedent. We also have preat admiration for

your stand on the Maddox situation, and appreciate the difficult
position your courage and integrity forces you to take.

Though a minor point, we would like to tell you that Stokeley
Carmichael's public descriptions of you as "King Ivan" and "Race
Czar" brought, to our personal knowledge, nothing but contempt
for his ridiculous charade,

Thank you very much, Mr. Mayor. You have our support as well as
our admiration.
