Dear Mayor Allen:
T agree with you that Lester Maddox is not qualified to serve as Governor
of Georgia. However, I was astounded to hear you attack him with ridicule
in a press conference last night.
Mr. Maddox thrives on ridicule. He has gained a great deal of support
from misguided sympathy and continued sarcastic attacks on him will serve
only to increase his support.
Please let us defeat Mr. Maddox on other grounds. We do not believe he is
capable or qualified and should have no hesitation in saying so but let us
not make a martyr of him since such action will only insure his victory in
the general election.
