Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr.
Atlanta, Georgia

Dear Mr. Allen:

I wish to express my congratulations to you
for taking the stand you are about outlawing racial
discrimination in restaurants, hotels and other
private businesses.

America needs men like you and the Kennedys
who sare brave enough to hold democratic ideals and
who are willing to jeopardize their own political
futures to further their application in our daily
lives.

The rights of the individual are basic in
our society if we are to make real progress toward
achieving the brotherhood of man but the ideal must
be put to practice rather than be held as an abstract
and senseless ideal wnless it is carried out in
ways that are visible.

Patriotic ideals will survive only if men are
brave enough to practice them.

So I offer my heartiest congratulations to
you for doing your best to keep America the “land of
the free and the home of the brave", a place of
equal opportunity for all.

"with liberty and justice for all,"
