Mr. Ivan Allen Jr., Mayor
city of Atlanta
City Hall
Atlanta, Georgia.
Dear Mr. Alien:
Your action before the Senate Committee investigating the
Kennedy Civil Right Package prompts me to write my first
letter of protest. I am not a member of any Citizen's
Council, KKK or other segregation organization. I have
actively supported Ernest Vandiver, Carl Sanders and others
that stood for a moderate approach to the racial question
in the State of Georgia. Never-the-less it is appalling to
me that a successful business man, native Georgian, and Mayor
of our largest city could go before a nationwide audience and
completely contradict the views of such distinguished Georgians
as Senator Russell, Congressman Weltner and Governor Sanders,
who are conducting the fight for our economic existence.
I respect your right to your opinion but as an independent
business man I must protest your public stand on this issue.
So far at least, as a business man, I am not compelled to do
business with your company and I am today instructing the
Atlanta and the Macon officies of the Ivan Allen Company to
remove my firm from their list of charge customers.
I sincerely hope for the best interest of Georgia that the
people of the City of Atlanta can secure in the future leader-
ship that will continue to support some moderate principles
without a complete sell out to the super-liberals who would
eventually destroy one of our country's basis freedoms - free-
dom of association.
Yours very truly,
Yy
