Description

Interview with Dan Sweat, conducted during the writing of Georgia Tech History, Technology, and Society Professor Ronald H. Bayor's 1996 book Race and the Shaping of Twentieth-Century Atlanta. This interview mainly addresses the reactions of the Caucasian business and political communities to the election of Maynard Jackson as Atlanta's first African American mayor. A Waycross, GA native, Sweat was the Chief Administrative Officer for former Mayors Ivan Allen Jr. and Sam Massell. He had experience in journalism and graduated with a degree in public administration from Georgia State University. Sweat is known for conserving the Chattahoochee River and preserving Atlanta's water supply. He also improved Downtown Atlanta from being an area of abandonment to a community of mixed-income residences. Sweat is also celebrated for organizing programs to gather Caucasian and African American leaders in unity.
